Is your new book, This Is a Book, a good beach read?
[It’s] a very good beach read. It has a lot of different pieces in it, so you can read a short one or a long one. And that’s good for the beach depending on how sensitive you are to the sun. You can read a short piece before you burn or a long one if you already have a tan and don’t have to worry about burning. Or you can read a long piece if you’re not sure if you’re burning and see what happens when you get home. Either way it’s interesting. Also, the book can be used as a small, thick towel. It is sold dry.

Now that your show, Important Things with Demetri Martin, is over, what “important things” are you planning next?
I am writing another book, a new stand-up special and a movie. Each will be better than the other.

Why is attending your show the coolest thing to do in Chicago today?
There are many reasons: The show is indoors and will have excellent air-conditioning, I think. I will be wearing one of the coolest shirts that I own, both in terms of ventilation and stylishness. The other comedians featured on the show are as cool or cooler than I am. I will be giving away a prize to at least one audience member—this may not be true depending on whether or not I remember that I said this. Finally, because I don’t really care if people come to the show or not, but I prefer that they come to the show.
