History bleeds into the present in Hayes’s work, which revisits speeches and slogans from the past to engage politics and civil-rights issues today. The New York–based artist’s video installation Parole, which features a riveting performance from artist-actor Becca Blackwell, is the centerpiece of this show. But An Ear to the Sounds of Our History, a series of photographs in which Hayes arranges ’60s and ’70s spoken-word albums from her collection, also prompts us to reconsider public figures and the attention we give them.
