Grave matters

Hidden Truths includes this 1863 cemetery map laid over a Google Earth image of Lincoln Park.

Lincoln Park—the actual park, not Trixie’s nabe—still houses thousands of corpses that were interred there in the mid-19th century, when the land belonged to the Chicago City Cemetery. Pamela Bannos’s conceptual art project Hidden Truths reveals how the city “forgot” these human remains. In addition to installing six markers at significant sites in the park (on view through November 21), the Northwestern senior lecturer presents her fascinating research online at hiddentruths.northwestern.edu.
