Poetry takes over your Friday night
Tonight is too damn full of goodness, it's up to you to decide. The first event is for fans of youth poetry (and you better be fans of youth poetry) as the students of Youth Connections Charter Schools read their poems at the Jane Addams Hull House Museum at 1-4PM. The event will be hosted by hip-hop-poet and immaculately-groomed-facial-hair-guy, Kevin Coval as the kick-off event for students about to compete at the Louder Than A Bomb citywide team poetry festival. All ages.
The next in-yo-grill event will be an internationally touring poetry troupe, the Whirlwind Company, comprised of Mindy Netifee, Brian S. Ellis, Jon Sands, and Mike McGee. All of them have books through Write Bloody Publishing (WriteBloody.com) and they are all professional performance poets. This particular event is presented by The Encyclopedia Show and features National Slam Champion Roger Bonair-Agard. That's at 7PM at the Silver Room. It will be mindblowing. And i don't say that very often. All ages.
The final event (and if you're good at life, you'll be able to make it to all three of these) is a hip-hop show featuring underground hip-hop masters Beans (of Anti-Pop Consortium), SKECH185, Tomorrow Kings, and DJ Uncle El. I would call them "conscious hip hop" but that might ruin their cred, so let's pretend all you'd hear at this show is about how many boats they own. They own a lot of boats! It all happens at Subterranean at 9pm. 17+.
