Big fall releases

We make the odds of whether these long-awaited books will be worth their weight in trees.

By Jonathan Messinger

Her Fearful Symmetry, by Audrey Niffenegger (Scribner, $26.99, October) Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife came out of nowhere. Her second novel—about twins who inhabit their aunt’s haunted London flat—comes with much anticipation. If the Scribner folks are laying down $4.8 mill in these times, we’re guessing they feel good about it. Odds of meeting our expectations: 3 to 2

Manhood for Amateurs, by Michael Chabon (HarperCollins, $25.99, October) Kav and Clay novelist Chabon publishes his first memoir, largely culled from the author-as-a-young-man essays he wrote for Details. So on the one hand, it’s Chabon, but on the other, it’s Details. Odds: 3 to 1

The Year of the Flood, by Margaret Atwood (Nan Talese, $26.95, September) Atwood’s been novel-less since 2003, and her latest picks up where that one left off. Oryx and Crake was some first-rate sci-fi, but we’re always skeptical when a novelist returns to the well. Odds: 5 to 1

Chronic City, by Jonathan Lethem (Doubleday, $27.95, October) Lethem’s last novel, You Don’t Love Me Yet, felt like a placeholder. This new one from the genre-bi-curious author has built strong buzz about a rejuvenated Lethem. Here’s hoping. Odds: 7 to 1

Lost Symbol, by Dan Brown (Doubleday, $29.95, September) After six years (and many, many delays), Brown’s Da Vinci Code follow-up is at hand. All of those delays lead us to believe you shouldn’t get your hopes up. Odds: sealed by the Vatican
