Point of no return: Dahl tees off on reports of radio comeback

Steve Dahl

Robservations on the media beat:

  • Reports of Steve Dahl’s return to radio have been greatly exaggerated. Despite headlines this week trumpeting a comeback, the Chicago radio veteran said he’s simply using WJJG-AM (1530), the west suburban daytime station, to promote his $9.95-a-month subscription podcast venture. A three-minute segment culled from his archives will be edited for airing once an hour each day. The confusion began with a WJJG press release — “Steve Dahl RETURNS” — that stated he was joining the station’s “growing lineup of super-talkers” (including syndicated hosts Mancow Muller and Michael Savage). But the release didn’t mention that Dahl would merely be recycling material for an unpaid ad. “All these guys from the newspapers are bugging me while I’m trying to golf yesterday,” Dahl complained on his podcast Tuesday. “They kept asking me irritating questions like: ‘How do you feel about coming back to radio and being on a 750-watt station?’ You guys don’t get it. This is like an infomercial. It costs me nothing though. It’s a free infomercial for me.  And then you see headlines like: ‘Steve Dahl back on daily radio.’ I’m not back on daily radio. That’s not true.”
  • Are Chicago’s CBS stations planning to launch a local news digital channel? Nothing is definite, but officials of WBBM-Channel 2 confirmed that they’re talking about the possibility with their counterparts at all-news WBBM-AM (780) and WCFS-FM (105.9) and sports/talk WSCR-AM (670). The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that CBS is about to unveil CBS New York Plus, a digital channel combining the newsgathering resources of WCBS-TV and the company’s news and sports radio stations there. A Chicago version likely would compete with NBC Chicago Nonstop and Tribune Co.-owned CLTV. “We’re not ready to discuss specifics yet,” said Bruno Cohen, president and general manager of CBS 2.
  • Carla Carpenter, former assistant news director at WLS-Channel 7, has been promoted to senior vice president of digital media for the ABC-Owned Television Stations Group. In her new role, she will oversee development of strategies and initiatives involving the Internet, digital channels and mobile platforms for all eight ABC-owned stations. Since 1997, Carpenter has been vice president and news director of WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.
  • Jerry Springer, Bill Kurtis, sportscaster Jon Miller, country singer Rex Allen Jr. and National Public Radio’s Susan Stamberg will be among presenters November 5 at the Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Larry King will host the black-tie event at the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Inductees for 2011 are former President Ronald Reagan, sportscaster Graham McNamee, commentator H.V. Kaltenborn, Gangbusters, The Great Gildersleeve, National Barn Dance and Suspense. With the opening of the Radio Hall of Fame Gallery, museum founder and president Bruce DuMont said, “America will finally have a place to honor the great radio broadcasters who have defined the medium — a shining beacon in the heartland that recognizes the significant role radio has played in our society.”
  • A 1977 interview with legendary Chicago sportscaster Jack Brickhouse is among the latest additions to Speaking of Radio, Chuck Schaden’s wonderful website dedicated to the Golden Age of Radio. Brickhouse, who was 61 at the time of the interview, recalls the start of his broadcast career in his native Peoria that led to his 33-year run at WGN. Schaden includes a link to a 1947 broadcast of Sports Memory Lane from WMAQ featuring Brickhouse. It’s not to be missed.
  • Speaking of Brickhouse, the Hall of Fame broadcaster will be remembered along with the late pizza king Rudy Malnati Sr., a pioneer of Pizzeria Uno, at a celebrity fund-raiser next week. The third annual Jack Brickhouse and Rudy Malnati Sr. Benefit will be from 5 to 10pm Monday at Pizano’s Pizza and Pasta, 1808 North Waukegan Road, Glenview. Celebrity bar tenders will include Bob Avellini, Elliott Harris, John Lattner, Bob Love, Wayne Messmer, Fred Mitchell, Kevin Moore and Bill Zwecker. Proceeds benefit Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Of course Bruno can't discuss specifics. CBS Corporate in New York hasn't told him what he's supposed to think about the new channel yet.

Mike North - MY GUY! - will also be at Pizano's in Glenview.

"All these guys from the newspapers...." It's comforting to know that there still ARE guys from the newspapers. I daresay the Tribune probably had to cancel its editorial board meeting and have its members fan out to cover this story.

I was really disappointed when I read about Steve Dahl's "RETURN TO RADIO" on that radio message board. I thought Steve had really hit bottom joining a 750 watt suburban radio station that no one can hear. Thanks for clarification on what it actually is Robert. I'm glad someone is paying attention!

Also at Radio Hall of Fame Gala will be "Lve From the Red Carpet" interviews done by Jim Bohannon and Kathy Posner. Fun!

Actually, the clueless one here isn't some guy at a newspaper, doing his job (Bob Channick of the Tribune?) -- it's Dahl himself. WJJG clearly has a mandate to raise its profile, and it's doing so with some bold moves, like hiring Matt Dubiel, picking up Mancow's syndicated show (likely for peanuts). So how would Dahl think that WJJG and Dubiel *wouldn't* play this up? Geez. And Dahl's reaction to Feder is *so* comical -- it smacks of the guy caught associating with people whom he doesn't want his hip friends thinking he's associating with. Look, Steve, be proud -- WJJG is ascending, and whether you like it or not, you're going to be part of it! Also, Steve, ad or no ad, paid or not paid, you *are* now back on daily, terrestrial radio again. Embrace it, my man!

I recall that Jack Brickhouse announced Cubs games while at WGN.

The thing smelled fishy when I first read it. I think it's time to stop acting like it's big news every time some radio has-been shows up on the air for an hour or something.

Oh yeah. Steve Dahl... Thanks for mentioning his name. I had forgotten about him. And I've never listened to 1530-AM.

-->Also, not to mention that Dahl plays Roeper twice a month on WLS-AM, but it apparently isn't a return to radio either, just that Roe lets him plug the pahdcast.-->As far as CBS 2.2, that wouldn't be mimicking NBC Nonstop, as Nonstop is mostly News Raw and reruns of mostly NBC lifestyle shows from NY and food clips from the Weekend Channel 5 News. However, I wonder how much people will want to see a prerecorded news loop featuring Felicia Middlebrooks, Zach Zaidman, and the like. I guess Laurence Holmes won't be on there, because he has a deal with 5. But, as in the case of 5.2, 7.2, and 38.3, I guess they might get some revenue from it.

That "Dahl RETURNS" press release is quite a piece 'o [you fill in the blank][but for the sake of keeping it clean] work. Doesn't exactly exude credibility. "The cult of personality that is Steve Dahl..."??? "Newly crowned General Manager..."??? It's actually worth taking a minute to read for the sheer humor value!

Feder, your blog sucks lately...a steady stream of updates on has-beens like Dahl and Muller, obsessional coverage of Randy Michaels, stories about Hall of Fame inductees and a parade of dead or near-dead media folks who haven't been relevant in 25+ years. For Christ's sake, cover something that is NEW, break a story...get off your ass and start making the blog interesting again.

Jack Brickhouse was amazing. When calling the cubs games, he and legendary director Arnie Harris, would take shots of the camera men and other crew and give us a little inside info of what went into those excellent telecasts. One very hot afternoon they showed a few of the old RCA tube-type color cameras with bags of dry ice on them.

Not topic related... but as a former mid-westerner... sure wish WGN would release some "best of Uncle Bobby" CD's. He too was a great Chicago legend!

...“All these guys from the newspapers are bugging me while I’m trying to golf yesterday,” Dahl complained on his podcast Tuesday. Oh, poor Steveie! People bug him while he's golfing...such an awful life! This just shows how lazy he's become over the years...he was lazy in his WLUP and even AM 1000 days, but now he's incredibly, obsenely lazy! Does Dahl actually show up at the WLS studios when doing his gig with Ro, or do they have an ISDN line down to the fat blob's basement so he won't have to, actually, you know get off his ass and go down there in person? I used to be such a fan of his but he has so gone downhill! If you guys wanna hear someone a thousand times more creative, check out Phil Hendrie. Some of his voices can be really annoying but he at least does stuff that's funny, and his podcast is actually worth paying for unlike Dahl's snorecast.
By CJ (not verified) on 10/19/2011 at 10:18 am
Phil Hendrie is great but unfortunately there is NO podcast worth paying for. There is just too much free entertainment on the net to need pay for anything. Granted not all of it is great or even good, but did Steve's podcast get better all of a sudden because he started charging for it? I can't answer that because I haven't found anyone willing to pay for it. And I live 5 miles from WJJG so I guess I won't be able to sample Dahl on that 750 Watt SuckTorch!

Wait, Steve Dahl golfs? What the hell has happened to this guy? First he hasn't been seen in a Hawaiian shirt in years and now he's golfing?
By ChicagoStreetTalk (not verified) on 10/19/2011 at 11:24 am
How embarrassing for Dull. He sues Mancow for making fun of his wife and wins. Now he's on the same station. Karma. And,he's not getting paid. If he had any subscribers he would not be doing this. Total subscribers in the neighborhood of 400 to 800. I might be being generous. His Monday night football party was filled with family and friends of the staff along with a bunch of angry guys. "I was golfing." Good to know his audience is paying for him to play golf and not work on the show.
By Jim (not verified) on 10/19/2011 at 11:27 am
Steve Dahl said on his somewhat clever but unwatched weekly piece on Fox Chicago that he golfs "like a 5-year-old," so he has great room for improvement as a golfer and can probably accomplish it with greater ease now that he's lost a considerable amount of weight. On the other hand, it would be very difficult for him to improve as a broadcaster. To borrow a golf maxim to talk about Steve's broadcasting, not golf, as Johnny Miller once said about a guy who shoots par-72, "it's another 10 miles to a 71."

It's ironic how Steve Dahl once made fun of Larry Lujack, being an old man doing his radio show from his basement.guess who's an old man now doing his "FAKE" radio show from his basement.and begging for change and listeners.now that's funny Stever.

..so the 3 minute Steve Dahl experience on WJJG (Jag-AM?) will be 1 minute of content and 2 minutes of dead air, right?

All these 'Robservations' and everyone keeps hitting on the Dull Dahl story...marone.

Steve Dahl has kicked over so many sacred cows over the years and offended so many, that the mere mention of his name so agitates the childish minds. Interesting that he generates all this comment among all these names.

As far as the possible CBS 2.2, If Bruno Cohen is allowed to do it, I wouldn't be surprised if it involves simulcasting some of the "WBBM Newsradio 780 AND NOW 105.9 FM" shows, like the "Noon Business Hour" with Sherman Kaplan & Kris Kriedel, and maybe Bears Pre/Post Game in studio segments. Obviously, "When Radio Was..." would not work out :-) How about "CBS 2 News" replays when the OTHER stations are not airing news as a counterprogramming measure as well?
By Bob Y. (not verified) on 10/19/2011 at 5:34 pm
I think the saddest thing about Steve lately is how he tries to beg and bully people to subscribe to his podcast. In the old days, he never had to do that -- he was funny, and happening, and people tuned in without his pleading, or his wife making quilts to raffle away. As much as Weintraub's World sagged toward the end, at least I had enough professional pride not to grovel before the public. A creative person puts his work out there, and lets it stand for himself. Given how few people listened to Steve for free on the radio, who in their right mind would pay for it now? Nothing to be ashamed of -- it's hard to remain funny as you age. But really ...

The photos attached to 3 of RFeder's last 5 blogs have been quite revolting. And I ain't referring to Bob Newhart or Johanna Zorn.

Steve who??? Get hip and get with the times, the Dahl is dead. Time to move on.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/19/2011 at 9:02 pm
I'm guessing Steve Dahl is nowhere near the 10,000 subscribers he was so confident he would sign up. Otherwise I doubt he would be doing infomercials on a station that generates less wattage than most microwave ovens.

Steve Dahl = Minding numbingly Boring and Dull The mere thought of him puts me to ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The person using the ghost of Larry Weintraub as his identity is creeping me out. You are no Larry Weintraub...never was...never will be. If your own writing and opinoins are too stupid to claim...don't voice them.
By Tobi Williams (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 9:51 am
"Never was, never will be" -- Tobi, you have no idea how that swells my poltergeist's heart. If only it were true. But we cannot escape ourselves, and our fates. We earn them, day by day, word by word, until the great cold wave of oblivion crashes over us all, good, bad and indifferent, some more quickly than others, but all the same. Still, it is nice not to be forgotten yet, so good that you remember, cara mia, and would have kind words for me, and in such a public place. Only happiness dear. I'll fade to black, if that is what you prefer -- though frankly, many writers from ancient days are only remembered for being mocked by those better-remembered, and perhaps it's preferable to endure as a figure of fun than to vanish totally except -- of course -- for those who remember and love us.

Agree with the above poster that Feder's column is getting stale, with the same has-been names being reported on again and again. Reminds me of a certain former Trib columnist whose 1990s output mostly alternated between praise for Michael Jordan and pity for Baby Richard. When not checking out teenage girls...

I find it stunning that in the 3rd largest market that CBS and Fox don't have any digital subchannels. The Ion station -- 38 -- has had more subchannels than 2 and 32 combined. Each station in town can have 4 total channels. WTTW and 38 are the only ones to take full advantage. Networks own these stations; no reason whatsoever not to use these signals to better serve the public. A real cable news channel is the least CBS can do. CLTV can use the competition.

We just jumped on WJJG's site, noticed Mr. Dahl in a "Disco Sucks" t-shirt and fell out laughing. Please, let it go and move on. You can't stop the BOOM BOOM! Folks are bangin' major disco right in in Amsterdam at the ADE festival. We're also looking forward to the upcoming Winter Music Conference in March of next year. Just go to wintermusicconference.com and see for yourself. All you have to do is leave the basement...

I hope that a split to 2.2 won't cause the 2.1 signal to weaken. Lately 2.1 has been decent, even 20 miles out from the transmitter. Comcast seems to be playing with the strength of the 5.x signals, perhaps to lure cable subscribers ??

I'm willing to bet WJJG is donated to the Catholic Church before the end of next year...That would be something that Joe Gentile would have wanted and another way to extend his legacy...
