Another loss for NBC 5: Zoraida zooms to CNN

Posted in Robert Feder | Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Oct 20, 2011 at 1:00pm

Zoraida Sambolin

Chicago television is about to lose one of its loveliest morning stars: Zoraida Sambolin is leaving WMAQ-Channel 5 to join CNN in New York.

A nine-year veteran of the NBC-owned station, Sambolin has been anchoring NBC 5 News Today since 2007. She’s expected to work here though mid-November.

“We all know how passionate Zoraida is about the stories we cover and the communities we serve,” Frank Whittaker, station manager and vice president of news at NBC 5, told staffers in a memo Thursday. “We will miss that passion and her dynamic personality.”

Whittaker said a search for Sambolin’s successor will begin immediately. She currently anchors alongside Rob Elgas from 4:30 to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.

A Chicago native and mother of two, Sambolin has come a long way since she joined NBC 5 with virtually no news experience as a free-lance weekend news anchor in 2002. She previously had been host and executive producer of the weekly Small Talk for Parents for the City Colleges of Chicago’s WYCC-Channel 20, and host of Nuestros Ninos on Telemundo Spanish-language WSNS-Channel 44.

When her on-air work won her a few local awards, Sambolin told Oprah Radio’s Jean Chatzky, she contacted an agent to seek more opportunities in television. “I walked in … and she looked at my tape and said, ‘I have just the person I want to show this to,’ ” Sambolin recalled. “And she went and showed it to the general manager [Larry Wert] … and he hired me on the spot basically.”

Working on the weekend morning anchor desk became her crash course on television news reporting. “It was a lot to learn — It was a very complex environment to work in because I had not had that training that happens in smaller markets,” she told Chatzky. “If you have the desire to do something — If you have a passion for something — you are going to do it, you are going to do it to the best of your ability, and I think more often than not you are going to succeed.”

Soon after she started, Sambolin added anchoring and reporting for Telemundo, becoming the first Chicago broadcaster to work on the air at both English and Spanish stations simultaneously.

She’s the second high-profile personality in recent weeks to leave NBC 5 for a network gig in New York. Ginger Zee, who just signed off as weekend meteorologist, is expected to join ABC’s Good Morning America Weekend November 7.

I remember Robin Meade making the move from that same show to CNN and now she's a big country and western music star. I don't remember much, but I do remember that. I don't watch the NBC5 news because I'm still sedated until a little later in the morning, but I'd bet you a salad from Dominick's that the semi-lovely Melissa Forman would be the perfect replacement for this girl whose name I can't even pronounce. Put Ms. Foreman's teeth up against this lady's and you'll see how much more qualified she is for the job based on her tooth whiteness alone. And now that she wouldn't have to pronounce Quadaffi or however you spell it, she won't mess it up on the air. I think she's figured out how to say Rahm, so she should be ready to take on the NBC Tower. Good luck to whatever her name is and I'll be lighting a candle that the semi-lovely Melissa Forman replaces her.

Does anyone ever post anything on this blog besides snarkers and smartasses?
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 2:12 pm
I will really miss Zoraida as I am a dedicated NBC5 morning show viewer. She is genuine, on point and a great asset to the station. Good luck to her! And now....Kim Vatis, please!

I agree that Ms. Sambolin has been a great asset for the NBC5 news broadcast. But Kim Vatis? Anybody else, please!

Congratulations! This is wonderful news not only for Zoraida.

NO! I guess this 10/30 will be our last church charity party with her, we're sad...es muy mal.

2:12 pm.....There are dozens of posters on this blog, and dozens more who can't come up with anything better than "Anonymous".....but we haven't heard from "smartasses" for a while.

Sorry, but CNN is a career GRAVEYARD. Zoraida is a fine talent and now nobody will see her . What a shame.
By Paul (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 9:05 pm
Does that sad, sad person really think it's even marginally clever to keep repeating the grating, dated, smarmy phrase 'semi-lovely' followed by a teeth whitening 'joke' about some FM radio personality? My God! I don't know anything about Melissa Forman, but if you asked 100 people reading this blog if they'd rather have Ms. Forman's life or the life of the person who pathetically repeats the same non-jokes about Ms. Forman, 100 out of 100 would choose the former. If there's a land beyond the land of creepy, that poster is the mayor of that land.

i'm sure she's terrific. just couldn't stand the way she whistled the letter s when she reported.

This is a huge loss for Channel 5. Not only was she great on the air, but had great chemistry with Rob Elgas. I will miss her smiling face every morning. Give the job to the new weather girl, Cheryl Scott. She has the looks and personality.
By Ripken Boy (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 9:47 pm
Kim Vatis would seem to have the upper hand, in seniority and position...but I wouldn't count out Lauren Jiggetts or newcomer Michelle Relerford. I'm aware that Relerford is new and not a familiar face on the show, but it seems like these stations always hire someone new before the old guard leaves. I'm thinking that this has been in the works for several months, and we're only hearing about this now that everything is confirmed.
By John (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 9:59 pm
Kim Vatis has many positive qualities - but she just hasn't got that "Morning Magic" for me - she's too cold & stiff.
By Frito Bandito Mappo (not verified) on 10/20/2011 at 11:01 pm
I don't ever remember seeing such an overpaid mediocrity as Sambolin. I am sick of her irritating voice and her condescending attitude. The only thing she ever ever ever had going for her was her fairly attractive face. She has nothing else to offer. Listen to her reading the news.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 5:11 am
To Anonymous whose remarks are one of the most idiotic I have ever read - Zoraida Sambolin had personality plus, looks, creativity and funny. Attitude, not. I have always liked her welcoming, sweet smile. Overpaid mediocrity, what, are you kidding. Absolutely not. Actually, she was one of the better newsreaders on the Chicago stations. Good luck to her!
By Peter (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 5:55 am
I too will miss her. I only watched at most 10-15 minutes of the news each day. She and Rob seemed to have a nice chemistry. How about this down the road. Lester's son and Jiggets daughter working the anchor desk?
By Giorgio (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 6:11 am
Working nights, she is the first news person I see in the morning. She will be missed!
By Dave (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 6:47 am
How can Whitaker, with a straight face, say that people like this are hired for any reason other than their looks? Instead he wants us to believe it is her "passion about the stories we cover and the communities we serve". What a crock! Would she have been hired if she had that same passion but was 60 pounds overweight?
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 7:12 am
Yes, 5:11 am Anonymous, I have listened to the fully-lovely Z read the news. She does a fine job as long as the words are not too challenging, and then a cache of weapons will become a cachet of same. One more vote for the totally-lovely Kim V.
By Mark Doogan (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 7:48 am
I was watching Ms.Sambolin when she was on channel 20 doing Small Talk,She has it all.!!! The looks, the smarts, the posse.I met Ms.Sambolin once when she come into my store that I was working at.I went GAGA.NOT LADY GAGA.Two years from now she will be as big as Katie Kurick was in the late 90s.
By FAMous KD (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 8:47 am
Zoraida Sambolin was a great morning show anchor. I wish her the best of luck. Now she and Don Lemon will be working together again at CNN. My vote for her replacement is Lauren Jiggits who is very personable, has great chemistry with Rob Elgas and is a natural at reporting as well as anchoring. Sorry, but Kim Vatis is too stiff, talks too fast and is not a good fit as an anchor for a early morning show. Lauren Jiggits would be a perfect fit and create a seamless transition from Zoraida Sambolin.
By Teresa (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 9:12 am
Definitely a big loss. ZS is one of the most beautiful women on Chicago television, who delivers the news with poise and class. I see no "attitude," other than having some class and decorum. While cynics may not respect what she has made for herself, I do. So, the challenge for Comcast will be to find another with that mix of beauty, class, credibility and warmth. Not easy. For me, that's not Kim Vatis. Nancy Loo has it. Maybe they can put Alison Rosati on at 430am, so I won't have to continue avoiding their 10p failure? You can begrudge Sambolin (or Zee, not a big loss) for seeking greener pastures. I, for one, will check her out on CNN.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 9:19 am
Give the job to Steve Dahl.because his podcast is not working.
By Garry (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 9:31 am
Zoraida will be sorely missed. Refreshing to start the day with - bright, witty, and pretty, as well. Lauren Jiggetts may be a good reporter, but she never smiles. You'd think she could have a personality like her dad does. Not the way I want to start my day.

Oh! Please, do not put Kim Vatis on the set. I agree that Stefan Holt and Lauren Jiggetts should do the mornings along side Pete Sack. Kim Vatis is cold, stiff, and boring. Kim Vatis reminds me of ABC 7 sucks station boring no. Please!put Lauren and Stefan not Kim. Kim Vatis belong at ABC 7 since she is boring just like them. I will miss and met Zoraida Sambolin a bunch of times and met her 2 cute kids. I love and enjoy her good luck Z and the best of luck and I hope you come back to Chicago again.

I am a big fan and will miss watching Zoraida every morning. She is personable and classy. Good luck to her at CNN!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 10:18 am
I did enjoy watching Zorida on Dance Friday but otherwise not so much. When she reads a story she goes into this bizarre enunciation mode wherein the inflections of her voice do not match the flow of the story. I also was distracted by the imaginary booger she constantly rolls between her index finger and thumb. But my favorite Zorida moments are when she practically has an orgasm thanking Andy for the weather report.
By Joe (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 11:22 am
I know the semi-lovely Melissa Forman. I have been on tv with the semi-lovely Melissa Forman. And you (fill in the blank) are no semi-lovely Melissa Forman!.. I know a lot of "comments"fill this space on a regular basis. I'm expecting icon or has-been at any moment. No matter. I find the material here far more entertaining than what I hear or read anywhere else.

I'm reading reports on the internet that you have been a bitter man since leaving the Chicago Sun-Times, Mr. Feder. I certainly don't sense that from your writings. I wish you nothing but the best, Robert!
By A Bitter Mr. Feder? (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 1:27 pm
to "anonymous" who asked if everyone who comments on Mr. Feder's subject are snarkers and smartasses--the answer is yes. pretty much everyone on here who comments with a fake name is either an underpaid media person, a fired media person or just an arm chair quarterback who, if put before a camera light, would melt.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 2:05 pm
I've got an idea what Zoraida Sambolin will be doing at CNN. Although nothing is set in stone, I predict that Zoraida will be trying to jumpstart the struggling "American Morning", or a similar morning news/talk show that CNN is mulling over. "AM" hasn't been the same since Kiran Chetry & John Roberts left the New York-based morning news/talk show for separate reasons. She'll be missed around these parts, but she'll be America's gain much like Robin Meade has become at HLN and what Ginger Zee will soon do for ABC's "Good Morning America".
By Andy B (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 3:08 pm
It really cracks me up that someone posting as "Anonymous" criticizes other posters that use fake names. At least the names have a posting history and a certain identity or branding connected with them. (Anyone critical of Katie for instance is either a newcomer here or is named Melissa.} What do the dozens of different "Anonymous" posters have?

By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/21/2011 at 7:47 pm
No great loss here. Her annoying voice and constant insipid personal comments did nothing for me. She also seemed to struggle with anything more than local stories, constantly mispronouncing both individual names and place names. Good luck to her, tho.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/22/2011 at 6:39 am
@Anonymous 6:39 am - her annoying voice and her constant insipid personal comments? Jealous I would think. She'll do just fine.

The Z's are going to the Big Apple...We will miss the good one, Zoraida...the other one, Ginger Zee...thank god she is gone. She was usually off with her forecasts and too giddy on the air. I got the impression she was more worried about her hair then what she was actually saying. And the numerous tech errors go to her, they were often.
By Stan (not verified) on 10/24/2011 at 8:11 am
Too bad, we're going to miss Zoraida, but Kim Vatis will be fine, she does great on the weekend morning show, does better without Stephan (Lester's son) Holt. Hope they don't lose Rob, can't imagine his replacement. Kim and Rob will keep me watching!
By Bob (not verified) on 10/24/2011 at 8:39 am
Over the years, I have studied the posts by Katie Knott Foreman and I conclude she is someone who (a) massively failed in her own attempt to whiten her teeth (b) lost a job to Melissa Foreman (c) lost a man (or boy) to (d) was fired by Melissa Foreman (e) an underpaid media person or (f) a fired media person. That said, I don't care. I find her communiques most entertaining and, oddly enough, sexually stimulating.
By Sulaman Bergarden (not verified) on 10/24/2011 at 6:39 pm
Oh no not Kim Vatis, her monotone will put everyone to sleep at that hour. Search for new talent. Jiggetts? I don't think can fit the bill either. You need someone with a strong presence (ie: good looks if you will and very cheerful). Don't think they have anybody like that on staff with the exception of Rosati, but she's got her spot at night already.

Bring Larry P and Robin B from WGN Morning news....they're the winning team. Very, very funny.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/26/2011 at 9:34 am
How about bringing back Chelveston, one of the great morning show personalities of all time? Every time the secret word was said, like "cachet" or "cash," the duck could drop down and a lucky viewer could get 50 dollars. In "cash," of course.
By lise dominatrix (not verified) on 10/26/2011 at 12:28 pm

By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/26/2011 at 9:56 pm
I really don't care for all the fluff they have on this morning show. It's irritating at times.
By WindyCity (not verified) on 10/28/2011 at 11:13 am
Yeah, I hate all that fluff like the murder du jour in Englewood. Although kudos to Channel 7 the other night for what must have been a two-minute lede story with 10 seconds' worth of facts on the 10 p.m. about a double murder in Skokie. Very well-packaged, but might I suggest leading it off with a "Murders Where You Used To Live" intro to appeal to the aged who watch appointment tv like the local newscasts? Maybe a little "Sixties" music like the Stones' "Street Fighting Man" underneath the narration. I think Magers could sell it. Brock I'm not so sure.
By lise dominatrix (not verified) on 10/29/2011 at 7:05 am
Why the quotes around "Sixties"?
By bruce wolf (not verified) on 10/29/2011 at 7:08 am
@Katie Meade Pauley, Robin Meade is hardly a "big" c&w music star. She's known for being the host of her morning HLN show.

If your a leg lover who watches CNN your in for a real treat, Zoraida is nirvana for leg lovers. She has spectacular legs & she loves to proudly show them off. Lets hope the suits at CNN don't hide her behind a desk. They would be wise to design a set with flattering camera angles that "showcase" her assets. The formula for ratings success is simple, "it's not about the news, it's ALL about the views". Fox has used that approach to garner huge ratings, but Zoraida has the gams to hold her own with any of the leggy Fox babes. http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5510/zoraidagams.png

By mk (not verified) on 11/06/2011 at 10:56 pm
I'm so sorry to see Zoraida go, the morning news just won't be the same. They really need to find someone who can offset Rob, the goof ball, Elgas and Kim Vatis isn't the right counter part. Please don't let the only reason to watch the morning news be Andy (who I love!) and Matt!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/21/2011 at 5:01 pm
Thanks to Gams Guru for expressing my thoughts on Zorida's great legs! I couldn't go to sleep until after the 5:41 websense segment I will go back to channel surfing now that shes gone. Maybe put Ms Jiggets on the stool with Rob?

NO KIM VATIS!! She Doesn't have it.I will have to find another News Channel if she continues to give the news she puts me back to sleep..in the morning
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 6:06 am
I am so happy Zoraida has left. I changed to watching channel 2 news because I couldn't stand her. I remember how heartless and cold she was to Bruce Wolfe when she subbed for Ellie on his Earlier Today show. She was arroganat and just plain rude. When she moved to the news, I remember her and Dick talking and she was empty-headed. She knew nothing about anything. I remember, also, how she made a big deal about girls not able to hug in school. She ranted how awful this was so many times, that I couldn't stand it. Well, as a teacher, I can tell you this is a great rule. If you allow girls to hug, what will prevent boys from hugging girls. Boys would be going up to girls and hugging them even if the girls would not welcome this. Also, hugging causes traffic jams in halls, that are usually too narrow for others to go around easily. I finally wrote her, and she saw my point. I just turned on channel 5 and noticed Kim on the news. She, I like. She is more down to Earth than Zoraida. Zoraida was too stuck on herself, especially after she had her stint on the Today Show. After that she was just too good for anyone including her audience. I started watching channel 2 and, personally, like the people on this show. I hope Andy leaves also. Ginger should have had that position. She is definitely a loss to channel 5, but the new girl is cute and I enjoy seeing her on the weekend.

.....guys lets NOT confuse her with anything great!....when she first started the NBC5 morning show she was out of place....when I wake up, I do NOT want somebody who is going to put me BACK to sleep...and that was her personality. Rob Elgas was good, a bit of humor, but SHE....UGH, was miss perfect, nothing humorous, dry, always downplayed any risque news...jeez I bet she blushed while reading the word SEX!!!....Even now, look at her on CNN, she lacks skills next to her accomplished partner...she fumbles too much...she has this look as if shes forcing herself to SMILE....CNN while not keep her on that show long...sorry Zoraida...but lets shed the MOTHER THERESA mentality....it NOT what people want to see!

I've been watching NBC5 ever since i moved from DC to Chicago 6 years ago. Great news, great people. The loss of Sambolin is HUGE. Vatis = no comparison. I tried to give her a chance... Sorry, but its just sooo bad now! Almost painful to watch. If it werent for Rob, Andy & Matt - I would not be watching - AT ALL.
By chicagogirl (not verified) on 2/11/2012 at 2:01 pm
I interned at NBC back in 2006 while she was there, & she didn't feel remotely approachable, altho most of the other bigger local talent were. As a fellow Latina, i'd hoped to have some kind of solidarity w/her, but she was definitely not someone I could emulate. Despite also doing work on Telemundo, i'd bet she was just doing it for exposure & to expand. She had an air of superiority over me, like she didn't want to be regarded as a Hispanic mentor, but to be regarded as an equal-- in which respect, I guess, she can't really be blamed...she is a victim of our culture & the industry. She is just minimally easy on the eyes, but to her credit, she doesn't over do it w/the heavy make-up like most female anchors do. I totally respect that. Now on CNN, tho, its clear she has only a tenuous grasp of world issues. Her former colleague here at Chicago, Don Lemmon, made a fabulous transition to CNN-- from the get-go, he's had far more charisma, knowledge, & is much more eloquent than Zoraida.
