More on Zoraida: CNN’s ‘American Morning’ beckons anchor

Zoraida Sambolin

Robservations on the media beat:

  • Following former WMAQ-Channel 5 news anchors Robin Meade and Don Lemon, Zoraida Sambolin is on the path to stardom on CNN. As first reported here Thursday, the anchor of NBC 5 News Today is leaving the NBC-owned station after nine years to join CNN in New York. Sources at the network said she’s been hired as one of the anchor replacements for American Morning, the three-hour morning news show that’s been struggling in the ratings. The program has had at least four anchor teams in its 10 years on the air, according to TV Newser, which said the current version will be replaced with two two-hour blocks. CNN’s Soledad O’Brien (who previously co-hosted American Morning from 2003 to 2007) and ABC’s Ashleigh Banfield also have been mentioned as anchors of the new shows.
  • It’s over and out for Mancow Muller in the Big Apple. His Sunday night talk show on WABC-AM in New York was among the casualties of cutbacks Friday at the station under new owner Cumulus Media. Laurie Cantillo, program director of WABC, had nothing but praise for Muller, whom she hired in September 2010. “Mancow has a unique, high-energy approach that won him many fans in New York,” she told me. “I’ll never forget his powerful show from Ground Zero on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. He’s a pro and a friend, and I wish him the best.” Muller continues to host his Monday-through-Friday morning show for Talk Radio Network from Chicago.
  • Comedian Mark DeCarlo, a regular contributor to ABC 7’s Windy City LIVE, will host the 53rd annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards November 6. This year’s ceremony will be at Alhambra Palace, 1240 West Randolph. Nominees are spread out over more than 60 categories and subcategories. With such an inflated definition of “excellence in television,” you could argue the event has more to do with making money for the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Entry fees range from $95 to $210. Ads in the program book range from $40 for a three-line message to $400 for a full page. Tickets for the dinner range from $125 to $145 (not including cash bar). Of course, it’s always nice to take home a prize. Winners can purchase additional statuettes for $240 to $290.
  • It’s been a year since WGN-Channel 9 news anchor Mark Suppelsa stepped down from his side gig as morning newsman for the top-rated Eric and Kathy Show on Hubbard Radio hot adult-contemporary WTMX-FM (101.9). But he’ll be reunited with Eric Ferguson and Kathy Hart, filling in all this week for newsman Brian “Whip” Paruch. Says Suppelsa: “I spent the weekend preparing for this assignment . . . by searching for that old alarm clock that used to wake me up at this ungodly early hour.”
  • It’s great to hear Bill Leff regularly on WGN-AM (720) again. Now that Cubs baseball is in hibernation, the veteran Chicago actor, comedian and radio personality can be found most Saturdays from 1 to 4pm on the Tribune Co.-owned news/talk station. “The show is patterned after the classic television series The Big Valley,” Leff deadpanned. “I’m very much like the Barbara Stanwyck character. Yes, I talk pop culture, sports and politics, but all while trying to keep the ranch safe from cattle rustlers. Judy Pielach lost a bet, so she’s in there doing news for me. WGN’s research shows the program appeals primarily to flautists, second graders, and retired circus people.
  • From the time Fahey Flynn left WBBM-Channel 2 in 1968 until Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson were united in 1973, a revolving door of anchormen kept spinning at the CBS-owned station. Among those who passed through was Wayne Fariss, who died Friday in Lake Placid, Florida, at 82. Noted for his rich baritone and stoic delivery, and hailed as “as one of the most important and recognizable South Florida newscasters of the past 50 years,” Fariss enjoyed a 27-year run on Miami’s WCKT-TV (now WSVN-TV). He retired from broadcasting in 1984.
  • Third Chance was the charm: ABC 7 news anchor Ron Magers was the proudest thoroughbred breeder in town Saturday when Third Chance, the filly he owns with WLS-AM (890) afternoon personality Roe Conn, won the Powerless Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course. Magers posted a photo of the horse and a photo of the winning owners (with their trophy) on Twitter. Carrots and congratulations to all.

It's great to hear Bill Leff again. He's such a talented and likeable radio personality. I wish he was on a Monday - Friday time slot instead though. Saturday from 1-4 just isn't enough.

Really? I thought Bill Leff was pretty worthless on The Roe Conn show...

CNN certainly did well choosing Robin Meade. Not so with bumbling yappy dog Don Lemon. Hopefully Sambolin will be a better fit. O'Brien might be a good fix for American Morning, too. Banfield...yawn. Obviously intelligent but she's bland, certainly not what CNN wants in their morning slot.

Is Steve Cochran writing Bill Leff's jokes?

A tad off-topic, but appropriate for a Robservations column: Ken Davis, last heard regularly on WBEZ several years ago, is doing some superb reporting and editing as an ad-hoc reporter (I presume that's a freelance gig) for WBEZ. Monday's Morning Edition on WBEZ broadcast a lengthy report by Davis from Occupy Chicago's Sat-Sunday soiree, with informative on-site reports from participants (including vacuous protesters as well as thoughtful protesters; all voices provided excellent insights to what the heck was going on), a great sense of ambiance that only radio can provide, and a very mature, deft handling of the over-arching story. Keep up that kind of reporting, and I may have to renew my dollar-a-day membership.

Finally Zoraida got her wings. It was a matter of time before this go getter reached for something far more worthy of her talent. See ya on CNN.

Zoraida's talent is going to take her far. She is blessed to have her great looks, she does a great job in the mornings. It will be tough replacing her.

Good luck in New York Zoraida Sambolin. The mornings will not be the same, you and Rob made a great team.

Sometimes you can't just sit around waiting for "the perfect" opportunity to come around. You have to take small steps that will eventually lead you to bigger and better things. Going to New York to try and revive a show is challenging, but Sambolin has what it takes. And if the new team fails to turn the ratings around well, at least she will have the exposure. She is a work in progress and there are many great things in her future. She's going to do just great.

Some people stay put for decades waiting for the "perfect" opportunity to come. I'm glad Zoraida is not opting to stay seated in that anchor chair doing the same old thing day in and day out until the management decides she needs to go. The next step is challenging, and even if she/and the new team fail to turn around the ratings at CNN, she will have gained great exposure. Much luck to her.

Zoraida is a wonderful lady who -- in addition to being one of the best, most talented anchors and reporters with a tremendous personality -- helps so many important causes. She is a fabulous person who lends her time and talent to so many important causes. This is a brilliant pick up for CNN. Best of luck to Zoraida, you will always be a Chicago girl. But we have to share you with the world now. Bob, this is one of those instances where you are correct, Zoraida will be a bright star at CNN!

I can't believe Zoraida is leaving. How can NBC let her go? I have been watching her and Rob Elgas for the longest time and I actually enjoy them. I hope to catch you on CNN in the mornings now. Good luck in the big apple.

Don't worry ZBabe, the minute you flash your gorgeous legs on the CNN couch, you will be an instant success & the ratings will soar right through the roof. If CNN's AM has any thoughts about competing with Fox & Friends for ratings Zoraida has got to "outleg" Gretchen Carlson. Should be one helluva' hot& sexy leg duel cuz' both Zoraida & Gretch have luscious gams & they both luv to show em' off!!

Proud to be a misogynistic sexist pig?
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/26/2011 at 10:58 am
Sexist pig because he's telling it like it is? If you don't think tv bosses think like that you need to wake up. Why do you think women get boob jobs? To attract!

It's easy to sit back in the online bushes knocking talent in these commentaries. Something I enjoy from time to time, actually. But doing a "whack-a-mole" on Bill Leff is akin to pulling Thumper's ears or pantsing Mickey Mouse. It's unAmerican and just plain mean. Bill brings a much needed useless and often too hard to follow silliness to radio. His fill in role with John or Amy at WIND was a joy when he'd ask something really dopey of a political figure. It showed a total lack of show prep which is fine in these instances since those pols normally are a pile of talking points anyway. Kudos to Bill. He actually brings the average listening age on WGN down to the high 60's.

Zorida belongs in a local news cast! She is BORING and so is ROB! She will FAIL at CNN just like all the others.....not a good choice! Now, Ashley Banfield is a VERY attractive and fun person. They need a guy like Rob, who does the weather from Atlanta for CNN.....hot, hot, hot team!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/02/2011 at 2:58 am
I like the new cnn morning show. Both Ashley and Zoraida are beautiful, but Christine is as well. The CNN laidies blow away fox or msnbc. and then we follow it up with Soledad. I love watching the news. Can I get a signed poster of CNN morning anchors?
