CNN-bound Zoraida: ‘Chicago will always be home’

Posted in Robert Feder | Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Nov 4, 2011 at 12:00am

Zoraida Sambolin

Like Jane Pauley in the ’70s, Deborah Norville in the ’80s and Robin Meade a decade ago, another anchorwoman from WMAQ-Channel 5 is leaving Chicago and headed for network renown. But Zoraida Sambolin insists she won’t be cutting ties to the city she loves.

On Thursday CNN finally announced what readers of this blog have known for two weeks: After nine years at the NBC-owned station, Sambolin will be joining CNN in New York to launch a new morning newscast early next year. In place of American Morning, she and Ashleigh Banfield, formerly of MSNBC and ABC, will co-anchor from 5 to 7am weekdays. They’ll be followed by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, who’ll anchor from 7 to 9am.

“I have to say leaving NBC was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made. My team is my second family,” Sambolin told me. “I’ve had the privilege to work with a group of talented, dedicated and funny people that make going to work a joy. I will miss them and our loyal viewers who through the years have supported me and held me accountable.”

Although her last day here will be November 11, Sambolin promises she won’t disappear after parting company with NBC 5 News Today co-anchor Rob Elgas, meteorologist Andy Avalos, traffic reporter Matt Rodewald and reporter Lauren Jiggetts. “My hope is to continue the dialogue I enjoy on a daily basis with our viewers through Facebook, Twitter, email and the occasional phone call,” she said. “I am not cutting ties. There are many organizations I love and support that will continue to own me. Chicago will always be home.”

Teaming Sambolin and Banfield is a key element in CNN’s plan to boost ratings with what the network described as “a new program covering a broad spectrum of the day’s news from two highly personable and passionate journalists.” No date was announced for the debut.

“I am thrilled to be joining CNN and look forward to working with an incredible team of accomplished journalists,” Sambolin said. “Having access to the worldwide platforms of CNN and sharing them with our viewers is very exciting.”

Sambolin’s rise in television news has been meteoric. The Chicago native and mother of two had virtually no news experience when she talked her way into a job as a free-lance weekend news anchor at NBC 5 in 2002. Within months she was doing double duty as an anchor and reporter for Telemundo Spanish-language WSNS-Channel 44, making her the first Chicago broadcaster to work on the air at English and Spanish stations simultaneously. She was promoted to weekday anchor of NBC 5 News Today in 2007.

Frank Whittaker, station manager and vice president of news at NBC 5, said a search is underway for Sambolin’s replacement. Until one is named, reporter Kim Vatis will co-anchor alongside Elgas on the Monday-through-Friday newscast.

We got to see another side of Zoraida when she hosted charity events for churches & schools - sometimes with her parents. We know it's a cliche, but she's the last person we thought would leave town. We'll miss you ... Y'all come back now, y'hear?!

Is it too late, a la Deborah Norville in the last century, to have a Zoraida Week in the Robert Feder blog? Or has there been a de facto one already?

best of luck, remember there is a lot of road kill in the CNN rear view mirror, Aaron Brown, Paula Zahn, etc., etc.

She's lovely. Wish her the best and hope she comes back soon.

So, just this morning when I decided I Really like Zoraida and that she is a truly caring reporter, I learn that she is leaving NBC Chicago! I have watched the morning news with Zoraida and Rob for over two years now. I always liked her, but today something just clicked. I seem to keep losing the anchors I really like for one reason or another. Zoraida is a beautiful and talented news anchor. I will miss her, but wish her the best.

I was surprised (since you reported this a couple of weeks ago) that NBC5 and NBC Chicago Nonstop were still running ads for the 4:30 a.m. news with Zoraida still visible in the background.

Giorgio hit the nail on the head, CNN ia a "graveyard". Zoraida was very good here but CNN will put her in a format featuring the usual cable news losers. CNN runs in circles trying to recapture their glory days. As the Hawk would say, "This game is ovah".

If the VERY deserving Kim Vatis doesn't get the gig, NBC5 will be my last option for morning news.

Will miss the good Z. No reason to watch the NBC AM News show after she leaves....

Sambolin has always seemed adequate in her teleprompter reading, but Elgas displays the on-air personality and authority of a popsicle stick. So, like Craig Lee before me, it's "buh-bye" to NBC 5 News Today for this viewer!

I dunno. It seems everyone who has or will sit in the morning anchor chair can demonstrate the requisite obsequiousness to Ann Curry of "Today" when she's previewing her latest charming day- in-the-life of this or that Holocaust-denying leader of Iran.

Rob, please file a report on Zoraida's first day at CNN. I really enjoy these daily updates on Zoraida.

We like you Zoraida, but get a grip. Nobody will shrivel up and die when you move.

Andy Rooney dead. Talk about working right up to deadline.

I am so sorry to hear Zoraida is leaving but know she has great potential. She was a pleasure to watch and listen to. Good luck Zoraida. I will miss seeing her next to Rob, Andy and Matt. Kim also does a great job. Hopefully she can replace Zoraida.

Kim Vatis might have been with channel 5 for what it seems like 100 years but I don't think the morning anchor chair is the spot for her. She is too dry and seems to laugh at everything which is kind of annoying.

Anonymous or Annoying A** this posting is about Zoraida Sambolin and not Michelle Gallardo. If you think you are being funny, you are wrong! So take your dumb comments and stereotypes to where they belong.

CNN daytime?? Maybe 10 ppl will be watching.

Anyone catch Zoraida this morning talking about how much she admired the Japanese robot's knees and later on discussing Jay Cutler's butt? Sorry Z fans, but this woman is overrated.

Zoraida is a true pro who cares about the comm-- hmmmmm... rumbling starting... can't hold it down.... Michelle GAAAALLLLLLLAAAAARRRRRDDDDDOOOOO!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/08/2011 at 6:09 pm
I'm happy to see her go. Her phrasing and cadence in her voice are so irritating!

Zoraida comes across on-air as a very efficient, reliable and intelligent news reader, so it is not surprising CNN would tap her. However, her on-air persona often comes across as patronizing and haughty...like the character "Lucy" to Rob Elgas's "Charlie Brown." That is very unappealing....makes me want to switch the dial. I hope CNN helps her warm up and shed that side of her TV presentation.

Hooray for Kim Vatis, I hope she becomes the permanent replacement for whats her name, she was just too silly for me, if Kim stays, I will return to the morning news on nbc.

I just noticed the past few weeks she was not on. I will miss watching her in the AM. She & Rob Elgas made a good team. I hope that they give that job to poor Kim Vatis. I remember watching Kim do all those field assignments in the cold, snow, rain,...she paid her dues!

I wish Z all the best. I would like to see Lauren Jiggets occupy Z's former anchor seat. Kim Vatis does not project an aura of interest in her reporting, hence, she comes across as insincere. Perhaps Kim should look into becoming a actress.

Apparently Oak Park won't "always be her home" as can buy her house for $1.8mil http://koenigstrey.com/107967084/530-N-Euclid-AVE-OAK-PARK-IL-60302/resultxsCPyu1xsCPyukuS
