When North jumps the gun, he’s dead wrong

Posted in Robert Feder | Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Nov 9, 2011 at 12:00am

Mike North

Robservations on the media beat:

  • Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight boxing champion who died Monday, got a premature sendoff from Chicago sports talk host Mike North. On his nationally syndicated Fox Sports Radio show Sunday, North reported that Frazier had died based on an unconfirmed text message he’d received. Then North spent the rest of the show backpedaling: “I know he’s in the hospice, but my buddy George texted me, ‘Joe Frazier’s dead.’ But if there’s no report, either they haven’t announced it and he’s got the deal, or he’s wrong. And I would have to apologize to the Frazier family — although I think when you’re in the hospice and you have liver cancer, it’s may be a little short trip to that point. But if you’re not dead, you’re not dead. So, as far as we know, even though I said earlier that he was dead, he may still be alive. We’re trying to nail it down.” Twenty-four hours later, he was finally right.
  • Saying he’s been “reborn as a rock ’n’ roll DJ,” the legendary John Records Landecker this week converted his weekday afternoon talk show to The John Landecker Music Explosion. Airing from 3 to 6pm weekdays on WIMS-AM (1420) in Michigan City, Indiana, the show also streams live on wimsradio.com. “I’m bringing in music from home, and the station is adding to its collection, so it’s really ‘grass roots,’ ” he said. “It’s really a blast. I’ve got that crunchy AM signal blasting in my headphones and the mic turned down low. Rock and roll music and the people who played it on the air are the reason I am in radio. In fact I have DJ DNA.”
  • Sharon Bialek, the woman who accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment Monday, had connections to three Chicago radio stations. She worked as a sales account executive at Tribune Co.-owned WGN-AM (720) from 2001 to 2004, followed by a stint as nontraditional revenue director at CBS Radio’s former WCKG. She reconnected with Cain last month at a Tea Party rally hosted by Salem Communications news/talk WIND-AM (560), where she reportedly also has been seeking employment. WIND afternoon host Steve Cochran, who was a close friend of Bialek at WGN, said he believes she’s telling the truth. “I know she’s a dedicated single mother, and I can’t see any scenario where she would come forward like this unless she felt she absolutely had to,” Cochran said. Cain has denied the accusations against him.
  • Denis King, who most recently headed the Denver bureau for Fox News Channel, has been named Chicago bureau chief. He succeeds Todd Ciganek, who left Fox News earlier this year to become vice president of information services for BidClerk, a Chicago company that produces research reports for the construction industry.
  • For a guy who’s supposed to spend most of his time podcasting from his basement, Steve Dahl seems to be everywhere: On this week’s installment of Check Please!, Dahl turns up as guest reviewer (with a recommendation of Davanti Enoterca on Taylor Street) at 8pm Friday on WTTW-Channel 11. That’s in addition to his filling in two days this week for Richard Roeper alongside afternoon host Roe Conn on Cumulus Media news/talk WLS-AM (890) and delivering his weekly commentary on Fox Chicago’s 9pm newscast Friday.
  • In a reader poll by Radio Ink, the immortal Dick Biondi this week was named The Greatest DJ of the 1960s. Amazingly, the 79-year-old Radio Hall of Famer is still going strong as Monday-through-Friday evening star on Cumulus Media oldies WLS-FM (94.7). Biondi’s legion of fans may have helped a bit after he promoted the poll on his website. Other Chicago radio icons in the top 10 were Larry Lujack (at No. 4) and Art Roberts (at No. 6).
  • John Garcia, the veteran reporter at WLS-Channel 7, will host the ninth annual John Drury High School Radio Awards November 19 at North Central College in west suburban Naperville. Named for the late ABC 7 anchorman, the awards recognize the nation’s outstanding high school radio talent. The event is sponsored by the college’s WONC-FM (89.1).
  • Remember Ed Tyll? The fiery talk show personality who most recently hosted middays at WEUS-AM in Orlando, Florida, has left radio after three decades to begin a new career as a teacher, according to Radio-Info.com. In Chicago, Tyll made a name for himself in the early ’90s as late-night talk show host on the former WLUP-AM.  His theme song (“Ed Tyll, you may not like what he says, Ed Tyll. But he’ll say it anyway, Ed Tyll.”) became an enduring anthem.

Very gutsy move by Steve Cochran to take the side of Sharon Bialek. I wonder how that sits with the conservative owners of WIND, Salem Communications?

Rob, You quote Cochran on Sharon Bialek, but not Chicago media icon Bill Kurtis? Here's some of what he said about Bialek on WLS Radio: “She has a history.” “There is a lot more to this story.” “I can assure you that there will be far more to this story.” “Let’s put Herman or Sharon in the car and say their roles may even have been reversed, given her track record here.”

Was that George Forman who texted North that erroneous information? Or maybe it was George Bliss? Hey Pappy, next time you report a death on the radio, GOOGLE first just to make sure! Man I'd love to hear that tape!

George Offman? Shorty George? Anyway, reminds me the same happened to Walter Payton.

Obviously Mike North's reporting standards are a bit shaky. He needs to take a cue from a real pro like, say, Michelle GAAAAAALLLLLAAAAAARRRRRDDDDDDOOOO!

Bialek will be proven a liar, sir. I too heard what several people who know her have said, and facts have a tendency of being revealed. Can't wait.

I remember when Sammy Sosa was caught with cork in his bat, Mike said he suspected Sammy was on steroids. Mike had no proof except his own lyin' eyes but he was right.

Bialek may be "proven a liar," but what about all the other women? Sorry, they're not ALL liars. Cain is a creep, ignoramus, and an idiot who has no business running for dog catcher, much less President of the United States. Oh, and he can dish it out but he can't take it. He obviously can't take the heat, so he needs to get the hell outta the kitchen.

Thanks Rob, as in the grand tradition of the Chicago Reader's Eddie Gold, "you listen to Mike North so we don't have to!" Well, someone has to. Though I suspect very few if anyone actually does. Talk about a lonely gig........ Chicago Mark

I wonder how many people actually heard Mike North say that. Who's listening to him....and why? My bigger question is, why was he ever popular? I never understood that?

Yes, It was me George Bliss who reported early that Mr. Frazier had passed away. I have supported Mike from his very first day on the air and want to apologize to my friend Mike. I take full responsibility for the premature report and Mike had nothing to do with the mistake. It was totally my text. I knew that Mr. Frazier was in fact gravely ill and my source told me of his death. As it turned out, Mr. Frazier died a few hours later. Again, The Egg is on my face for this report. Mike North is among the finest friends any person could have and I regret the mistake. George Bliss Chicago Ill 60601 312 217 0510 geobliss@aol.com

Let's hope that this "Sharon Bialek, the woman who accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment Monday, had connections to three Chicago radio stations. When Dahl subs for Roeper, I turn off the radio. I get that Roeper has other obligations but there HAS to be someone else to sit in his chair. Dahl doesn't have his own show for a reason.

WISM is a pretty crappy radio station, now they have music? Landecker has been doing a talk show there for a few years. He lives nearby and must like not having to drive into Chicago, or perhaps just priced himself out of Chicago. I tried it on line yesterday, He is so much better than Greg Brown on WLS-FM, same kind of show, the whole JRL show thing smells odd to me though.
By Claire (not verified) on 11/09/2011 at 10:04 am
Speaking of Dahl and Bialeck. Dahl said yesterday on the Roe and Roeper Show that Bialeck told many of the WCKG employees that Dahl hit on her when she was a teenager. Steve didn't deny it. She certainly gets around.

Recalling Ed Tyll's stint here - the man was as mentally maladjusted as anyone who's ever been on Chicago radio... And not in a fun way.

Fortunately no one heard what North said; no harm done.

Robert....thank you so much for today's mention. And Claire thanks for the compliment. As for the smell..I'll check under the studio for a dead rat.

I wonder in what reality Steve Cochran thinks having a child as a single parent automatically makes one more credible. His statement automatically makes him less credible. Maybe he can't imagine it because he didn't take an active role with his own kids' friends and parents. They may have too much to lose as a single parent, but we know personally of those in our community who see only how much more there is to gain. There are some vicious schemers out there, and they don't care whose family gets hurt when pursuing their personal agendas, including their own. Not saying that's Sharon's case, just that a full character profile needs to be taken into account.

Why isn't life easier? We got Mike North & George Bliss. We got the lady in Riverside who filed a false rape report. We got Herman Cain & Sharon Bialek. We got Steve Dahl & Sharon Bialek and a joke about sex when they were teens: aren't they the same age?! Maybe the end of the world is coming on 11/11/11 @ 11:11:11.

For jrp628 - You could easily substitute the name Barack Obama in ur comments about Cain.

Landecker on WIMS radio? Didn't know. Playin' oldies? Even better. Thanks to wimsradio.com , I won't have to wait for my summer vacation to Michigan City to hear him. More power to you John, and I mean watts.

Hey Mike North..... Sometimes you took the hot dogs out of the steam table too early, also.

Who'll ever forget Mike's "exclusive" 10 years or so ago at WSCR that Notre Dame was joining the Big 10.

Dear Low class to no class, You can't really criticize someone you're working with. Which is why it's so funny when Boersie and Burnside go into (?) high dudgeon over someone like Joe Paterno, a rather safe target. Boers a few months ago ripped Hawk Harrelson about blaming the umpires. Right after that rip they had Steve Stone on the show for a full half-hour and didn't ask him about Hawk's bias. What a profile in courage. That's why it's so important we have many voices and, thank God, the Walter Cronkite era is over. Still, I like Boers and Bernstein. I, too, enjoy tilting at windmills.

Was it you, Robert, who coined the nickname "Shrill Ed Tyll"? I have only dim memories of his show, but some of them are pleasant. He could BRING it from the left, as I remember.

Mike North is entertaining. He's maybe been a bit quixotic about some things through the years, but he's a decent guy...if a bit red-assed at times... He should, of course, stick to analysis of sports, movies, and other entertainment, and let experts declare times of death. Celebrate the life of the deceased once the death has been officially declared. A thoughtful celebration is better than a clunky "I was there first".

OMG. A heterosexual man made a pass at a woman after a night of dinner and drinks? And when she said no, he merely stopped? According to the media, this makes Herman Cane some kind of wild African animal.

He is married and he is running to be your President, but if you're cool with that, pull his lever if he can beat the rest of those GOP woefuls!

To Former Chicagoan: If you know something about Bialek, have the courage to come out and say it. If you're not confident in what you think you know, then why are you posting in the first place? WEAK.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/10/2011 at 5:49 pm
Cain ain't Able: You must not have listed to WLS-AM that day. Steve had some tape of Bialek claiming that he and Garry were giving her t-shirts and implied that they were hitting on her at age 14. Steve compared their ages and said that if it was when Bialek was 14, Steve was not even in town yet. So, believe fiction if you want to. Steve did in effect deny it. IMO, both Bialek and Cain are not credible.

"Hey Pappy, next time you report a death on the radio, GOOGLE first just to make sure! -By Michael F." Um... it was a text that was a scoop, which means he would have been one of the first to hear about it, which means it wouldn't be on Google. Google's not some magical entity that is instantly aware of every event when it happens. Someone has to, you know, report it, first.
