Kevheads rejoice: Matthews plugs into Dahl’s playhouse

Posted in Robert Feder | Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Nov 30, 2011 at 12:00am

Kevin Matthews

Steve Dahl calls it a “game changing deal” for his four-month-old subscription podcast venture. Listeners will call it a marriage made in radio heaven.

Onetime Chicago radio superstar Kevin Matthews, who enjoyed a spectacular 18-year run on the air here, has just returned to become the first personality to join Dahl’s fledgling podcast network. Beginning Friday, Matthews will host his own weekly show — uncensored and commercial-free — available exclusively to subscribers of Dahl’s daily podcast.

“My vision is to provide unique content, my personality,” said Matthews, 55, who's been out of the market for six years. “What is so exciting about this adventure is no rules. A podcast may last 45 minutes, maybe two or three hours. Content is key. I know when to exit a program.”

Matthews said he’ll tape each show from his home studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and incorporate vintage audio he recently found from his early days in Chicago. Terms of his arrangement were not disclosed, but Matthews confirmed that Dahl is paying him.

“I have been watching Steve and this adventure from the sidelines, and wish Steve only the best,” he told me. “I love radio. I love entertaining such a loyal audience. It’s rewarding to meet younger, second generation Kevheads.”

Starting in 1987 at WLUP, Matthews proved himself an improvisational comedic genius with a cast of real and imaginary characters, including his addle-brained alter ego, Jim Shorts. His ability to channel a variety of personalities in his head was truly breathtaking. “I don’t know how I develop my characters,” he once said. “It’s just a surge of voices coming out.”

Since he left Chicago in 2005, Matthews had been hosting mornings at WLAV-FM, the Citadel Broadcasting classic rock station where he’d begun his career straight out of Grand Valley State University in 1978. For most of that time, he doubled as director of program development for the southwestern Michigan station cluster. But with the recent takeover of the company by Cumulus Media, Matthews found himself — like a lot of his Citadel colleagues — suddenly out of a job.

Dahl, 57, who’d worked with Matthews for years at both AM 1000 and the former WCKG, immediately reached out. “I said, ‘Bro, let’s get you into the world of podcasting because it’s perfect for you,’ ” Dahl recalled. “There’s nowhere for guys like Kevin to go. Or guys like me, really, where we can do what we do best anymore.” After an initial phone conversation from the golf course, Dahl drove up to Grand Rapids to finalize the deal last weekend.

Calling it “a nice bonus for our charter subscribers,” Dahl said Matthews’ show will be included in the $9.95 monthly fee listeners already pay for unlimited access to the daily DahlCast and its archives. (In a deal that expires tonight, new monthly subscribers get the first month free.) And if Dahl has his way, they’ll soon be hearing a lot more of Matthews.

“I’m hoping that after we post his first show and he sees the response, he’ll start thinking about making it a daily show,” Dahl said. “We are set up to do that technically. Not sure how it would affect pricing, but we’ll jump off that bridge when we come to it. This is the future of personality radio, and anybody who is delivering good content will sooner or later be charging for it. Podcast listeners don’t want to hear commercials. I think this is an exciting new addition to what we are doing, and believe it is a tipping point of sorts.”

For his part, Matthews seems open to the idea of a daily podcast, but prefers to take things a bit more slowly, having reassessed his life after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008. “It is great to work again with Steve . . . and we both have come a long way,” he said. “I have learned a great deal since returning to Michigan. I have stayed close with Chicago and the entire Midwest. I now take it a day at a time and enjoy each day as it comes.”

Back in the early ’90s when Matthews was in his 30s and a huge star at AM 1000, I asked him to explain his widespread appeal. “I’m not breaking the law,” he told me. “I’m not spitting in the FCC’s face. I’m not doing anything mean. I’m just having a tremendous amount of fun in a medium that’s [otherwise] so boring, it’s killing itself.”

Then I asked him to predict his future. He laughed. “Can I see myself doing this when I’m 60? Maybe. It would be pretty funny to hear some senile guy on the radio who thinks he’s funny, and he’s really just a pathetic old bastard.”

Well, two egotistical bastards for the price of one!

I'm 55 and way too young to listen to these guys. Isn't it time for Eddie and Jim Shorts to die a nice peaceful death? Some new, younger talent is what this city needs on the radio.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 6:40 am
Hey "Anonymous" They are NOT "on the radio", is anyone forcing you to subscribe to the DahlCast? Read the article before making your stupid comments.

Devotion to Accuracy Department: Not a big deal (particularly to Chicago listeners), but Kevin didn't begin his career at WLAV-FM straight out of GVSU in 1978. He worked at three other GR stations, where he evolved from a conventional music deejay to the Kev we know and love, before landing at LAV around '83 or so.
By Bamjam (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 7:07 am
Problem is that there is no younger talent that is being allowed to show what they can do on Chicago radio in the same way that Steve, Kevin or Johhny B did "back in the day." Steve is onto something here and this is probably the only avenue for this type of entertainment. I am glad to have the ability to hear these guys even if I do have to pay a little bit.
By Ed Rad (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 7:13 am
Good for these guys...I wish Johnny B would do the same. God Bless the Stever and Kev. Do what you love, life is short. The haters don't get it and you don't need them...

Two Chicago radio has-beens for the price of one? Still not worth it.
By Abe Froman (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 7:51 am
This is a lot of words for some pretty small news. A weekly podcast from Grand Rapids that you have to pay to hear? That's a game-changer? "Podcast network"? Yeah, right. These "big names" that keep getting coverage are so big that no Chicago radio station wants to pay them to be on the air.
By DeJordy (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 7:59 am
This is the future of personality "radio." There's no room for entertainers on the radio dial anymore, it's all endless music, sports yappers and political ranters. Good luck to Steve and Kev, they're still the best.

What's with all these old guys getting pedicures? Why would I spend ten bucks a month to hear Steve and Kevin getting their toes painted? I don't understand this whole pedcast thing, what's the attraction, especially when you can't see the pedicure in action? I mean, I'd pay ten bucks a month to see the semi-lovely Melissa foreman get her teeth bleached or maybe even to see Mr. Feder write his column (and wasn't he on vacation so why is he working on his vacation? When I go "on vacation", I'm out for three or four days until they stop the IV) but paying to see Steve Dahl and Kevin Matthews get pedicures just doesn't make sense. And another thing, I really think that Jim Shorts has a sexy voice. Although I bet his feets are too smelly for him to be on this pedcast thing.

First of all, Steve should be kicked out of his country club for using a cell phone on the golf course. Second of all, who calls a middle-aged man "Bro"? Third of all, when is Johnny going to be included in this to do a semi-annual tightrope walk over the Chicago River? Fourth of all, if everyone including Tim and Beth Disa is going to receive remuneration for his services, I trust royalties will be paid to Bernie Madoff for taking his economic model. And fifth of all, Janet Reno! Boy, I'd like to...!

This isn't the first time Kevin Matthews will be podcasting. While out of work last time and before WLAV, he did his own podcast out of Kevhead.com. Then, presumably bitter at his extended unemployment, he was too often mean and unnecessarily vulgar. I'm a big fan of Kev. but I won't listen to someone in a lousy mood and an open mike. I wish Kev well, but I won't listen to him because I'm still not going to pay for Dahl.
By Brad Nailer (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 8:17 am
I can feel for Kev on the MS thing it took my sister. But as for doing the dahl thing ... and being paid for by him for it ... Thats a train wreck waiting to happen . Im sure steve will butt his 2 cents into it and force him to do more .. After all HE Is paying him .....As much as I loved them all "IN THE DAY" , BUT THAT DAY HAS COME AND GONE !!! Radio today is not the same as it was but, thats life things change, and fortunitly there is the internet and sattilite for people who dont know when to call it quits and retire .... Good luck to Kev .... it may be a short (no pun intended)Run on dahlnet .....

Was it just me, or did anyone else think....'naughty kitty' everytime the anouncers said Bryan McCann's name during the Bears/Raiders game this past weekend? I wonder if he's got any new books out?
By Raymond Brrrrrr (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 8:36 am
I enjoyed both Kev and Steve back in the day when they were popular. Today, it's just the same regurgitated schtick and definitely not worth paying for.

Steve you need to face it "BRO" now that's funny.it's over, you're embarrassing yourself.and bringing pour KEV in the mix.is just PATHETIC!

For all of those Kevheads, lets welcome back Kevin with open arms. It's been a long time since his tickled our funny bone, and am looking forward to his podcast.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 9:29 am
I wonder how big of an audience there is for these relatively expensive podcasts. I know it's not important or compelling enough for me to pay to listen to either one of them.
By Steve L (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 9:30 am
What, are you goofy? Kev's not getting older, he's getting longer.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 9:39 am
If you hate Steve & Kevin why would you read the article? I've subscribed to the podcast since day one. Loved it when it was free, really loving the uncensored version. For those who “don’t get podcasting” try a day for only .99 cents. The best thing about it is the ability to stop it & go back without missing a beat & no commercials. I remember listening to both Steve & Kev and the 6+ min of commercials 4 times an hour. Or having to get out of my car or turn off the radio due to a phone call & missing a great bit. Now I can go right back in mid sentence & never miss a beat. Welcome to the future people.

Anyone who rolls their eyes at the "good ole days" and thinks that the past should stay in the past...Well, if that's the case, then why are there multiple cable channels devoted to programs from the past? While looking toward the future is awesome, there's nothing wrong with continuing to love those people and shows that we listened to when we were younger. As for me, Steve has never sounded better, or been funnier! Let's all welcome Kev to the fold!
By Stephanie K (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 10:19 am
Kev's worth the price...but not Dahl.

There's a market for this and I wish them well. I wish there was an internet radio station that broadcasted live all my favorite DJ's from the 60's.----Ron Britain, Herb Kent, Larry Lujack, Bob Hale, etc. That's something I would listen to.
By Ken (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 10:27 am
That's gooood......that's verrrrrry good!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 10:57 am
Steve can add Garry Meier and Johnny B to the mix and I still won't pay for his podcast. Steve has worn out his welcome.
By Lisa (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:03 am
Congrats both Kevin and Steve! I am an annual subscriber to Steve's podcast, and look forward to it every day. I'm psyched to have a KevCast to look forward to, as well. Steve is a very talented visionary. He knows that radio is a dying medium and is doing his best to stay on top of the game. I wish nothing but success for them both!
By Liss (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:05 am
Seems like a lot of misplaced negativity from folks who, I'm sure, have never even listened to the Dahlcast?! If you like it listen, if you're not sure try it and see, if you have no interest don't listen, lighten up and enjoy your life. Congrats Steve and Kev!
By AnonDougymous (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:05 am
I used to listen to the Dahl podcast. It's not worth the money. Steve is still an egomaniac.
By Joe (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:14 am
There's no need to take the Steve and Kevin dislike personal. We all have differing opinions. That's what makes the world go round.
By Sue (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:22 am
I cannot believe the complaining you are doing. No one is asking you to listen if you don't want. I did not grow up in Chicago but came a fan in college. I think Steve is funnier now on a podcast than he was on the radio. Have you turned on a radio today, it is like watching Jerry Springer.

If Steve and Kevin's time has passed, there's nothing to replace them with. There has been *no* room for younger talent to develop in broadcast radio for many years. The grunt jobs that guys like Steve, Kevin, and Johnny (or Howard Stern, for that matter) held to work their way into big-market drive-time disappeared years ago. Those overnight and weekend shifts in little population-3000 towns? They've been computer-programmed for more than a decade, voice-tracked by the low men on the totem poles at some big-city station, thankful to have a job. The last time I was at Disneyland, I watched somebody recording those voice tracks, back-announcing the same song for every Radio Disney station in the country. *All* the conglomerates do this. It's more profitable than letting new talent develop on each of those stations. Maybe Steve and Kevin never make it big in podcasting. Maybe they won't even succeed--but somebody else will. Wireless data is becoming ubiquitous, and the choice it enables is the future.
By Jason (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 11:52 am
Seems to be quite a few people commenting if they are a couple of "has beens"?
By Boneload (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 12:00 pm
It just seems strange to me that anyone would pay $10.00 a month for two semi-talented has-beens, when for $14.00 a month you can get over 100 satelite stations via Sirious/XM. (Virtually commercial free music, sports, news, etc) But...to each his own. If people are willing to pay this kind of money to fatten "Stever's" wallet, it's their money. PT Barnum would be proud!

Kevin is the brilliant artist Dahl never was. Dahl is the shrewd conniving businessman Kevin never was. So we have arrived at the intersection of Opportunity meets Preparation. Genius. I will subscribe. As for Citadel Broadcasting, do NOT listen to them. It is nothing more than a commercial filled talent-less quaqmire of noise.

I give them both credit for trying something different. Look was satelite radio did for Stern. Stern basically saved Sirius and has been the cause of many subscribers. As many have said before, its up to the individual to subscribe, no one's requiring anyone to subscribe. As with terrestrial radio, you dont need to listen if you dont want to. Good luck to both Steve and Kev on this unique joint venture.

Steve is an idiot. Podcasts having been going on for years and Kevin Smith has a whole roster of popular people doing shows for FREE. Check out the podcast section of the Itunes store and you'll be able find 1,000's of podcasts covering a wide-range of interests. A person can also pay 10 bucks to hear an old fat man talk about his penis too! Good lord, Dahl just retire and go away.

Who in their right mind would choose to pay $10 a month for these two irrelevant so called conversationalists when for the same money you can get much better quality radio on Sirius XM for the same money? I mean, how long can you resist change and cling to the words of these two. MoJo Nixon on his worse day is funnier.
By Schlame (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 4:17 pm
To all of you haters: why are you reading this blog about Steve and Kevin if you hate them so? Why put yourself thru the misery of having to read about two people you can't stand. Furthermore, if you don't like hearing them or don't want to pony up $9.95 a month for their podcasts, then don't. I just don't get why you folks feel the need to spread your animosity towards Dahl and Matthews.
By Holger Meerbote (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 4:23 pm
10.00 a month to keep Steve on the sidelines at the Bears games, choice seats at the Hawks games and in comfort at his condo in Florida all winter? Hell no - I'll choose to spend my money more wisely!

Would have been nice to see Kevin turn up on Radioio with Bubba The Love Sponge. Bubba has tons of respect for Kevin and at least over there people would actually hear his show...... Plus a radio nerd like me would love to hear Ned and Jim Shorts on the air together, even just for a minute.

FYI, Kent in PHX, Wally Phillips is DEAD, so there won't be any podcast possibilities there. With the Kevin Matthews podcast, I'm wondering if his alter ego Jim Shorts will go into descriptive erotic detail about his love for CBS2's Pam Zekman, or if he may try to contact Dorothy Humphries just so he can tell her off with some choice F- and S- words.
By Bob Y. (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 6:21 pm

Anyone actually listening to what's on the radio these days? I will pay for a podcast any day. I have listened to Steve for many years. Followed him to every station and have followed him to his paid podcast. Try listening to a podcast for a few days and then go back to radio. You'll never turn am/fm radio on again.
By Henry from Chicago (not verified) on 11/30/2011 at 9:24 pm
Been listening to Steve via podcast for 4 years - going back to when he was on JACK. Only way to get him here in Boise, Idaho. I am now a yearly subscriber and thoroughly enjoy the show. Not many "comedies" in any medium make me laugh out loud like Steve's show. Steve is working with a young team in the basement at Dahl central and they bring new life and lots of grist for the comedic mill to the show. Haters can find their own entertainment. For the price of 3 lattes per month, I'll continue to lol with the Dahlcasters and, now, Kmath.

How pathetic has Dull become? He made fun of Matthews all the time on the air. It's funny now that Dull has to beg for listeners he can't make fun of anyone in Chicago any more. He can't,or won't, make fun of the news on Chicago TV. Can't make fun of Bob Sirott's blond hair? Might burn another bridge. How can he afford what he's doing? Mancow lawsuit money? There were only a handful of people at his MNF gathering. Podcasts are free on ITunes. No mention of the # of subscribers yet. Let's talk sports with old football players.

Here's my offer to you Steve. If you agree to do at least two Tommy Skillethead talking with Jim Shorts Bits in the next month, a friend and I will each sign up for year long subscriptions. Garry Meier partnering up with Tom Skilling every freaking day on WGN has to be some of the worst radio this town has ever experienced and it's so ripe for parody. Agree to a Skillethead and Shorts bit twice in the next 30 days and you get two new subscribers! Reply here please because that's the only way I know how to contact you. Say YES and we sign up!

How did Steve's son make out with the Jay Mariotti stuff(lawsuit)? Didn't really hear The Stever talk about Mariotti's dust up with his gal pal to much. Glad Stever helped his son out again. Lots of issues over at the Dahl house.
By Jim (not verified) on 12/01/2011 at 11:33 am
Wow, for a couple of has-been, no-talent idiots, this post sure does have a lot of comments, mine will be #61 if I have it correct. I have a feeling it's the same angry person posting over and over again under different names. Ok they have their issues with Steve, yet they know all about him, go to his Monday night football parties, and someone used the phrase "icky bad" earlier. Only a Kevhead would know that particular phrase in that context, so we get it, you listened and you get all the bits. Seems awfully silly to me, but have your fun. As for Mr. Dahl, to me he isn't quite as funny as he used to be, but I think Kevin will give him some of that spark back. Steve was always best when he had someone to work with, and i dunno...these guys he has with him just aren't quite as funny as the guys were back in the days of AM 1000 back in the mid to late 80s and early 90s. Those were some golden moments in radio for sure. Also, another thing I noticed is that Steve shines when he has some kind of authority to defy, and now that he's gotten older he's gotten really comfortable and he has nobody to answer to, so in that particular way, yes i'd say he's gotten a bit lazy. I could totally also make fun of Steve for the whole golf thing, but hey, Steve's 57 now. I think even a 30 year old Steve would say that when you're 57 you're allowed to golf. It's for older guys and that's what Steve is now. I've also heard a tiny bit of Kev's podcast yesterday, and I can't wait to hear the whole thing. If Steve's podcast isn't worth paying for, Kevin's is. at least to me! But with both kevin and Steve along, I don't mind paying $10 a month to hear all the podcasts. Like others have said, personality radio is basicly dead, and podcasting, while it's already been around for years, is something that people can listen to at any time of the day or nightt. Good luck to both of them!
By CJ (not verified) on 12/02/2011 at 9:42 am
Soooo, glad Kev will be back on the "Air"...I'm an older guy who is Still a KevHead. Steve you're right up there as well. Sadly I just don't hear any REAl creativity on the radio anylonger. The "suits" have killed the golden goose and LIVE radio is in real trouble. The numbers don't lie. Good luck Steve & Kev- I'll be a subscriber!

Does Mr. Dahl have any samples of the podcast posted so that folks can check out the product before they subscribe? Most membership sites offer a free trial so that folks know what they are getting. We only know about that lame, toxic Disco Demolition stunt where they blew up records...and then just stood around. What a climax. But that was 30 years ago...

I know I am not alone in enjoying the complete nosedive of these two idiots "careers." Dahl would make fun of anyone who ever got fired in radio and even made fun of Kev working in Grand Rapids. Now he is in his basement working on a podcast no one pays for with a guy he used to put down. Kev is a punk too. He talked smack about Dahl and now they are "bro's?" Just two unemployed losers who can't accept that they are not talented enough to work in the biz any longer. Sad but beautiful. The karma train is well worth the wait.

I could never take either Kevin or Steve for more than a half hour at a time. However, I really hope they make a go of this business. I'd like to see more moneymaking content on the web, I have to say. Everything in the world cannot always be free on the Internet!

Absolutely AWESOME radio. Steve is breaking new ground. I have listened to Steve since WDAI in places I've lived all over the world including Malaysia where I'm currently visiting. When I lived in Europe and in the Middle East, Steve's dahlcast has been a life saver. Never a huge listener of Kev but I just downloaded his show for my next flight tomorrow. Disco still sucks!

It's hard to keep track of all of Steve Dahl's feuds over the years but I'm pretty sure him and Kevin were on the outs at some point. Perhaps they mended fences before all this but if not it's a bit hypocritical for Steve to "hire" him. But it is all about money so hatred can be put aside.

Good grief, people. If you don't like it, you don't have to pay for it and listen, do you? Seems that just the mere mention of Steve or Kevin sends you off into "Internet comment rant mode". If you don't like them or care, then why invest so much effort into badmouthing them? Newer younger talent will NEVER make it on radio today, because the corporate conglomerates that own the majority of the stations won't allow it. It costs money to develop and promote talent - money they are not willing to spend. Clearly, when you see thousands on on-air talent lose their jobs so they can be replaced with a single talk track and computerized playlists, developing and promoting local on-air talent is nowhere near the top of their list - if it's on the list at all. You know where newer, younger talent will be able to find a place? The DahlCast. Kevin is right - content is the key. They could easily allow folks to submit stuff to the DahlCast and then "air" what they think has some merit or value. But on traditional radio? Not a chance. Not today.

I'm a subscriber to the Dahlcast and am glad to have Kevin aboard. Podcasting is the way to go since regular radio is dying a quick death.

Just listened to Kevin's first Pcast followed by the Dahl Friday show. Thought Kev's segment was a bit weak & awkward. Said he didn't want to look back but spent most of the show looking back. Am sure he will gradually adapt to the new format. Laughed out loud several times during the Dahl show. The banter & kidding between Steve, Brandon, Pete & Mary was hilarious. Joniak segment was great as usual.

These two has beens are fooling around in thier basements talking to 20 people while Johnny B is going to be doing morning drive on WGN starting next Friday. Dull playing golf and calling kev to make a deal, what a joke. If it wasn't so pathetic.... Welcome back Johnny B!!!!!!

I like Johnny B and will try to listen to his show on WGN. He's always got his energy up. I like listening to the Dahlcast because I can stop and start it whenever I want and can take it with me anywhere my iPod goes. Don't miss a word. I pay for Stern on Sirius and it is too much money for a guy to work a 3 day week and rerun his show ad nauseam with advertising and live reads sprinkled into the broadcast in awkward spots. Steve and Kevin are funny and wow, they have egos. Who knew?

Wow- this is pretty pathetic. Dahl has truly become everything he made comedic hay from, back when he was relevant to Chicago radio. Plays GOLF? Sat at home being paid $2 million a year for two years to stay off the air and ride out his contract? That's exactly what he made fun of Larry Lujack for when he did the same thing, and I quote "how bad must he be that they pay him to stay OFF the air?" Steve's main motivation has always been money, money, MONEY. I suspect Kevin's paying HIM for his sad little basement podcast. Prove me wrong.
