Happy New Year: Randy’s court date gets delayed

Randy Michaels

Robservations on the media beat:

  • Justice won’t come this year for Randy Michaels, the Merlin Media CEO who faces drunken driving charges in Ohio. Michaels, 59, was arrested in the wee hours of October 14 after police reportedly found his car stuck in the mud in a construction zone and smelled alcohol on his breath. After refusing to take a breathalyzer test, the former Tribune Co. CEO was charged with operating a vehicle impaired and driving on a closed street. Michaels' lawyer entered a not guilty plea. Wednesday was to have been Michaels’ day in court, but the hearing was postponed until January 13, according to Middletown Municipal Court records. In Chicago, Merlin Media owns all-news WIQI-FM (101.1) and classic rock WLUP-FM (97.9).
  • Newcity’s 19th annual Best of Chicago issue hits the streets today with another roundup of highly debatable (but conversation-worthy) local media luminaries populating its lists. Among this year’s winners: NBC 5 reporter Lauren Jiggetts as best-looking female TV personality; Windy City Live host Ryan Chiaverini as best-looking male TV personality; WGN’s Paul Konrad as best TV weatherman, and WFMT as best radio station. Named best future owner of the Chicago Tribune: Warren Buffett. “What better billionaire to own our paper than one who wants higher taxes on himself, not the ninety-nine percent?” Newcity asks.
  • Bozo’s Super Colossal Christmas Circus with Bob Bell, Roy Brown and Marshall Brodien, and Bill Jackson’s Please Open Before Christmas are among local treasures in Holiday Classics: The Best of Holiday Television & Radio Specials, David Plier’s online exhibit culled from the archives of Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications. Other highlights include Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, Suspense, The Honeymooners, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Charlie Brown, Mr. Magoo, Sonny & Cher, The Brady Bunch, Happy Days and Seinfeld. And who can resist the 1973 special Thirty Channel 7 Christmases, with legendary ABC 7 anchorman Fahey Flynn celebrating the station’s 30th anniversary — and reflecting on the meaning of Christmas.
  • Chris Pena, former assistant news director at NBC 5, has been named managing editor of NBCLatino.com, an English-language news site targeting the more than 50.5 million Hispanics in the U.S. NBC News plans to launch the site, featuring a mix of “news, politics, lifestyle, parenting, education and other issues,” early next year, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Pena told the trade publication that he plans to feature content that “goes far beyond the usual coverage of Hispanics in the mainstream media, and include stories on ‘successful and inspiring Hispanics,’ as well as issues directly impacting the community.” Pena, who had been overseeing daily news operations and special projects at NBC 5 since 2008, left the station in June to take on what had been an unspecified management position with NBC News in New York.
  • Me-TV, the Chicago-based network for classic television, wraps up its first year of national distribution with coverage over more than 71 percent of the country, including the latest additions of affiliates in Denver and Indianapolis. “If you stacked our 80-plus shows end to end, I’m sure we’d reach a mile high or more, so we are perfect for the Mile High City,” Neal Sabin, president of content and networks for Weigel Broadcasting Co., said in a statement. “We’re also thrilled to bring Me-TV to Indianapolis . . . People in Central Indiana have been asking for Me-TV since day one with emails and Facebook posts by the dozen, so we’re pleased to bring our memorable entertainment to Indy’s classic TV fans.”
  • One of the few encouraging trends in local television news may be a renewed emphasis on investigative reporting. Last month NBC 5 brought back Peabody Award winner Katy Smyser and is close to adding a second investigative producer for its Unit 5 staff. Around the same time, Fox Chicago hired Patrick McCraney, a Chicago area native who most recently was an investigative producer at WITI-TV in Milwaukee. McCraney, who’ll work closely with Fox Chicago reporters Dane Placko and Larry Yellen, is married to NBC 5 morning producer Lacey McCraney.

I'm surprised his attorney(s) couldn't get a court hearing sooner - seems as if Randy would want to be out of the court system as soon as possible.

I noticed that the Steve Dahl FORUM posters were attempting to slam the Johnny B. WGN broadcasts for having too many breaks and interruptions during their morning drive time shift. Of course they failed to mention that Johnny B.'s entire show is available on the WGN website ON DEMAND without any commercials, news, weather, traffic or sports. It's posted each and every day shortly after the live show airs. And it's FREE OF CHARGE and it's actually entertaining. Seem's like a pretty good bargain to me, especially the part about it being actually entertaining! Do we know how many subscribers Steve actual has? Is it close to the number of people standing outside the WGN Showcase Studio each morning watching Johnny's broadcast?

I've never been able to get any video from the Museum of Broadcast Communications to play, even after installing requested plugins or using different browsers. I have no trouble watching videos at any other website. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am happy that Lauren is the best female personality but i have to disagree about Paul Konrad best weather man and Ryan Chiarvanelli best male personality. I will say the best weather man is Peter Sack and the best looking man is Phil Schwarz even if he is on abc 7 sucks station.

Why the continued coverage of Randy Michaels? No one cares but you, Feder. It makes you petty, small and mean. Let it go.

Yes, Feder should cover Randy Michaels - so many people in media were impacted by his man's actions that his continued decline and crimes are news to us. If you don't care about what Feder covers, then don't read his blog. But for those of us who are interested in the antics of this nut, even after his Tribune disgrace, it's good to know there's a place we can read about it.

As far as the Michaels story, no one else getting a continuance in traffic court is newsworthy, unless they killed three people. Probably the cop didn't show up, and probably won't show up on the continued date. NOT NEWS. As far as NBC Latino, what's the difference between that and Telemundo? Oh, it is in English. Sort of like Telemundo CC3. Can Roser speak English? Do the dogs on her show speak Spanish?

Regarding Randy Michaels, the delay should give him time to select the appropriate dildo to wear around his nicek in court.

"Why the continued coverage of Randy Michaels? No one cares but you, Feder. It makes you petty, small and mean. Let it go. " When you act like an ass, you can expect to get treated like one. What goes around, comes around, schmeck.

I think that Patrick Elwood from Channel 32 is far and away the sexiest anchor in Chicago. He can investigate my back pages any time he wants.

Hey Bob I guess WFLD is paying for the new reporters by laying off more NABET people. Merry Christmas from News Corp.

Randy who?

MK, tell it like it is. I totally agree with you. I too want to know what's going on. And for those of you who don't want to know about Randy Michaels, then don't read Robert Feder's blogs and don't let us know you don't want to know about it.

I'm with MK. Bratty little toadish bullies like Michaels get that way because nobody reveals them for who they are; nobody holds their feet to the fire to do what's right. Every once in a while, a mission is required to minimize naivete and alert potential victims. Feder is on a mission... a mission from God.

AS long as Tom Skilling is working here, he will remain the best meteoroligist in Chicago.

Lamar, the internet (as well as Johnny B. podcasts) are NOT FREE OF CHARGE. A subscription to an internet or smartphone service provider cost$ money. The only way to hear Johnny B.'s show for FREE is by using a radio.

HMMMM! All those awards and not one for the jump-to-the-head-of-the-line Ponces. They couln't even come up with the NBCLatino.com managerial position. Has Phil lost his magical fairy dust?

NiklasE, I was referring to video at the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Nothing to do with Brandmeier or Dahl, not interested in those geezers at all.
By Lamar (not verified) on 12/16/2011 at 9:38 am
Randy Michaels begat Sean Compton who begat Jonathon Brandmeier on WGN. So let us be grateful. Yes, Mr. Michaels is not without sin. But it's not like he heard a voice that told him to take his son up to a mountain and kill him and was about to do so when he heard another voice telling him not to. Now THAT guy had to be blowing a .30. Probert territory. (He should rest in peace.)

Paul Konrad is more bowlegged than Robin. He has big ears like Mr. Potato Head.

This can give him time to think about the damage he has done for so many years.
