Madea’s Big Happy Family | Film review

Tyler Perry backslides into another self-help sermon in drag.

By A.A. Dowd

JUST US GIRLS Quality time with Perry and Devine.

Last year’s well-reviewed For Colored Girls suggested there might be life after Madea for Tyler Perry. Hold your hallelujers—he’s back in the dress. Perry’s ass-whooping grandma, who’s like Big Momma crossed with Dr. Phil, has her work cut out for her. The newest branch of the family tree is rotten with bad apples: back-talking kids, wimpy husbands and an ex–drug dealer (Moss) saddled with not one but two disrespectful, money-grubbing ladies. Epitomizing the schizophrenia of the franchise, Madea metes out Christian life lessons with one hand and bitchslaps with the other.
