Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated to play at Gene Siskel Film Center tomorrow
One late addition to our listings, because the screening was just announced last night: The staunchly pro–Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated, which earlier this week wasn't playing any closer than Indianapolis, will have a one-time-only showing tomorrow at noon at the Gene Siskel Film Center; the event is being sponsored by William J. Kelly, a Chicago conservative pundit known for confrontational tactics like challenging Alexi Giannoulias to a boxing match. "It is very important to bring this film to Chicago," Kelly is quoted as saying in the press release. "In this city where censorship of conservative political opinion prevails, freedom will have its say—at least for a day."
There is a measure of irony here, as in January 2008, the Siskel canceled screenings of the documentary Senator Obama in Africa in order to protect its not-for-profit status; in an interview at the time with Chicagoist, executive director Jean de St. Aubin said the theater can't be seen as endorsing political candidates. But this isn't an official film center screening. In an e-mail, Siskel programmer Barbara Scharres emphasized that the Undefeated showing "is a private rental event held by someone who is renting our facilities for his own personal use," and said that until yesterday, she didn't even know it was happening. The Undefeated was not exactly a critical favorite when it opened in ten theaters across the U.S. last weekend, but it's being followed by industry observers, and naturally, political commentators.
