The Beaches of Agnès

BATHING BEAUTIES Varda, left, poses with seaside circus performers.
Like the playful imp of the French New Wave, Varda, now in her eighties, looks back on her life and work. Don’t expect anything ponderous; Varda still retains her visual creativity, setting up mirrors on a beach, making a stage-set version of one of her homes, staging funny little reenactments. But she’s also musing on love (especially for her husband, Jacques Demy) and all the people now lost to her. There are so many ideas thrown on the screen that you may feel overwhelmed, but think of it as an all-you-can-watch film buffet.
