Ocean of Pearls

By Hank Sartin
CUTTER’S WAY Abtahi shows his O.R. skills.

The year 2002 is not an easy time to be a dark-skinned person wearing a turban in America. It doesn’t matter that Amrit Singh is not a Muslim but a Sikh. At the hospital in Detroit where he’s just taken a job starting an organ-transplant program, that turban stands between him and career advancement. It’s also a marker of his faith; following a strong religious injunction, Amrit has never cut his hair. This drama flirts with being a well-intentioned PSA about religious tolerance, but the performances and production values are better than you might expect.
