The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Dir. Terry Gilliam. 2009. PG-13. 123mins. Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Lily Cole.
Gilliam’s latest got undue attention because Ledger died during production. Since he hadn’t finished filming, the script was revised so that Depp, Law and Farrell play alternate versions of the character. It makes as much sense as anything else in this crazy rag-bag of a movie.
It’s Complicated
Dir. Nancy Meyers. 2009. R. 120mins. Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski, Lake Bell.
Credit Meyers with making films about people over 50, and with impeccable taste in interior decorating. Streep, Martin and Baldwin form a casual, gently comedic love triangle played out in beautifully appointed homes.
Orson Welles: The Paris Interview
Dir. Allen King. 2009. N/R. 53mins. Documentary.
This 1960 interview finds the great Welles happy to discuss the ups and downs of his career with his usual theatrical flair.
Transylmania
Dirs. David Hillenbrand and Scott Hillenbrand. 2009. N/R. 99mins. Patrick Cavanaugh, James DeBello, Tony Denman, Paul H. Kim, Jennifer Lyons, Oren Skoog.
You know how you were saying that what we need right now is a spoof of vampire movies? What? You weren’t just saying that? Huh.
