"Opening the Vaults: Mummies."

Last year, Field Museum scientists performed CT scans of more than 20 rarely seen mummies from Egypt and Peru. Before the museum’s fragile, 900- to 5,500-year-old mummies are put back in storage for safekeeping, they’re placed on display. The exhibit pairs the preserved bodies with CT scans, which reveal injuries, preservation techniques, soft tissue and the occasional strand of hair tucked away in the wrappings.
