The scene

It’s the same argument every time: Who gets the choice role of Egon in the “Don’t cross the streams” scene of Ghostbusters. For twentysomethings Andrew Weinrich, Paul Karpenko and Brian Peterson, such is the peril in being Chicago Movieoke regulars. Movieoke performers pick a scene from a catalog of more than 200—including quotable faves It’s a Wonderful Life, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Big Lebowski—and recite subtitled dialogue as a muted DVD plays in the background. When we ask regular Trey Johnson (pictured), 29, what pleasure he gets from play-acting Army of Darkness clips, he sniffs. “Dude, look at my fucking shirt! I’m wearing an Evil Dead shirt. It’s a movie-appreciation thing.” Perform for reel at the Whistler (2421 N Milwaukee Ave, 773-227-3530) December 7 and the Bucktown Pub (1658 W Cortland St, 773-394-9898) December 9.
