Your perfect weekend

Don’t rely on Hollywood to bring you your cultural understanding of the Christian–Muslim divide. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, an American Sunni Muslim dubbed “the West’s most influential Islamic scholar” by the Guardian, speaks in Elmhurst College’s Guestship series. At “We Are All Wayfarers” (Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 S Prospect Ave, Elmhurst; 630-617-3390; 7pm, free), Yusuf discusses theories of “otherness”—which you won’t find in Hurt Locker.

In hipsterdom, there’s always a next-new-ironic-thing. We’ve watched square dancing, Scrabble, bingo and spelling bees come and go like a Lady Gaga hit song. But the next next-new-ironic-thing takes the cake: CLLAW5 (Mystic Celt, 3443 N Southport Ave; cllaw.wordpress.com; 9pm; donation $5, with open bar $25) is a jokey theatrical rendition of a ladies’ arm-wrestling tourney. Watch Strawberry Shivcake, Armjolina Jolie and other Road House–inspired arm wrestlers battle it out for the trophy. Sideshow Theatre puts on this kick-ass performance so all proceeds can go to charity.
