Public libraries

Forget the Harold Washington book barn and Borders. This summer, get your reading material on the go with the Book Bike and the Community Book Exchange.

BOOK BIKE

WHAT IT IS
The hipster bookmobile, minus the gas guzzling. Since 2008, Gabriel Levinson, former reviews editor for Make: A Chicago Literary Magazine, has been a sort of lit fairy. The 27-year-old pedals his custom tricycle brimming with books and handmade zines from his Lincoln Square home to the city’s parks, where he showers picnickers, children and the homeless with free reads. Just don’t mistake him for the paleta man.

STOCK
This summer, Levinson is focusing on indie publishers like local artist-bookmakers Parking Block, NYC short-story slingers Electric Literature and TOC Books editor Jonathan Messinger’s baby, featherproof books. “I’m hoping to expose people to literature they’re not going to find walking into Barnes & Noble or even the public library,” Levinson says. He’s more than halfway toward raising $1,000 to buy titles from local bookstores and direct from publishers. Contribute at bookbike.org/donate or stuff a buck into the donation box at the Book Cellar (4736–38 N Lincoln Ave, 773-293-2665).

WHERE TO FIND IT
