The latest Cirque show to pitch its tent outside the United Center may prompt you to ask which came first: the title or the egg? Set in a teeming rainforest society of insects, 2009’s family-friendly OVO takes its name from the giant egg that arrives strapped to the back of a goofy mosquitolike newcomer (Barthélémy Glumineau). Glumineau and the show’s other clown characters, a sassy ladybug (Michelle Matlock) and the putative ringmaster (Simon Charles Bradbury), ogle it, fight over it and make its name a kind of all-purpose mantra in their gibberish speak: “ohhhhhh-vohhhhhh.”

The egg is imbued with such importance that you keep waiting for something to happen to it—surely it’s bound to hatch, or crack, or be eaten, or do anything other than disappear without fanfare just before the show’s big climax, right? Bizarrely, no.

At least the clowns—always the most tedious element of a Cirque spectacle—don’t dominate OVO like they did the last new Cirque piece to hit Chicago, 2009’s putrid Banana Shpeel. Here they mostly give way to the impressive insect-themed circus acts, enhanced by Liz Vandal’s eye-popping costumes. Mesh encasements around a hand-balancing acrobat’s legs suggest a dragonfly’s wings; a contortionist spider wears a cape of eight furry tendrils; sewn-on appendages give green-clad grasshoppers creepy-clever hind legs. The finale, in which those 20 grasshoppers use trampolines to bound up and across a 25-foot climbing wall, is an overwhelming visual delight. Brazilian writer-director Colker and composer Berna Ceppas use a samba-inflected score to welcome us to the jungle. But a touch more narrative connection would help the show go OVO easy.
