Long play journey

Christopher Piatt

The Goodman Theatre’s marvelously curated two-month Eugene O’Neill festival kicks off this week. In addition to Robert Falls’s revival of Desire Under the Elms, a host of visiting avant-garde companies will present their takes on O’Neill rarities. Among them are The Emperor Jones from New York’s the Wooster Group, Rouw Siert Electra (Mourning Becomes Electra) from Amsterdam’s Toneelgroep, the trilogy Homens Ao Mar (the Sea Plays, pictured) from Brazil’s Companhia Triptal and The Hairy Ape from local troupe the Hypocrites. In short, an embarrassment of riches.
