Somewhere in Texas
The Lone Star State is rich and strange in its contradictions, producing both Barbara Jordan and the Alamo, both Willie Nelson and that guy before Barack. It is also, according to Dream’s new evening of sketches, home to feuding roommates, awkward young lovers and bitchy first-time mothers. Menekseoglu’s lackluster scenarios may name-check Lone Star Beer, but their action rarely ventures outside the most familiar comedic territory. When it does, as in the surprisingly moving end to “Boy and His Elephant” narrated by the dying animal, the limitations of the other material become all too apparent. Some members of the young ensemble stand out, but too much stage time is spent on repetitive bickering.
