Shits & Giggles “Seasonal Affective Dance Party” at the Whistler | Review + photos
Unlike previous servings of Shits & Giggles, a sporadic cabaret of alt performance and post-drag, its “Seasonal Affective Dance Party” on January 26 didn’t end with Twinkie sodomy. And despite the Whistler being better laid out for a live show, with a proper stage and decent lighting, than prior venues for his Gigs, “gender ambivalent robot” and host Trandroid (A.J. Durand) fought to hold the crowd’s attention between acts. However cute, an origami demo drenched in vaginal innuendo, from “Leamer Twins” Sarah Cronin and Grace Torrence, dragged its feet while leaning heavily on SNL’s Delicious Dish. Cronin’s solo turn earlier on was far stronger, the burlesque evocation of an erupting volcano performed as her alter ego, Holly Deck.
MotherGirl (Katy Albert and Sophia Hamilton) brought awkwardly hot moves to the show’s theme, stripping off heavy winter coats to reveal…other heavy winter coats with bikini-clad bodies painted on them. Opening act al Qa’ida and the Radical Acts of Love (Maggie McFroog and Peter Weathers) offered some sort of sexy Montessori séance by the sea, singing harmoniously in German and finger-painting each other’s bodies in front of a beach scene, replete with sand castle, crudely painted on cardboard. Former Fabulous Lady of Fitness Jyldo (Jyl Fehrenkamp) executed choreographic aerolesque (burlobics?) with drum-majorette precision to Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On,” sporting a brief, solid gold ensemble and brandishing two rainbow fans.
Just as the crowd’s energy dispersed to the point of irretrievability, D’Juana Cyber (Steve Hnilicka) provided it with a center of gravity, grinding his way off the stage and out into the crowd to Janet Jackson’s “Go Deep,” from which he extruded a singalong. The scene was then perfectly set for a finale, delivered without restraint or apology by bona fide champion air guitarist Justin “Nordic Thunder” Howard.
Shits & Giggles returns to SALONATHON for “Sizzle,” on February 27 at Beauty Bar (1444 W Chicago Ave, 312-226-8828, thebeautybar.com).
