Candide adds performances through October 31

More than a week before it begins previews, the Goodman Theatre's production of Candide is adding a week to its run: director Mary Zimmerman's revival will now extend to October 31. This "extension," I should note, was most likely built into the Goodman's planned schedule; Zimmerman's much-anticipated revamp of the Leonard Bernstein musical, which by decades of consensus among theater writers is customarily referred to as "problematic," isn't likely to extend any further, with a transfer to Washington D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company slated to start November 26 (and the Goodman's perennial A Christmas Carol waiting in the wings for the Albert Stage, with performances beginning November 19).

The Goodman has also announced a few special events in conjunction with Candide. The "Glitter and Be Gay" package on Friday, September 24, targeted to LGBT theatergoers, includes a preshow cocktail reception with cast members and a talk from musical director Doug Peck. The "Artists Talk," before the Wednesday. September 29 performance, will feature a discussion with Peck and stars Geoff Packard, Lauren Molina and Hollis Resnik, moderated by theater critic Jonathan Abarbanel. And on Monday, October 4, Candide cast members will perform at the "Monday Night Live" cabaret series at Petterino's restaurant, adjacent to the Goodman. Check the theater's website for details on these events.
