John Coltrane's Atlantic Records reissued on vinyl

Between roughly 1957 and 1961, John Coltrane revolutionized jazz music. The transition from one approach to the next—ballads to playing free—occurred at such a stunning rate, that the sax player's albums from the period can't even be properly contrasted with one another. Each is that different.
Rhino Records, though, has endeavored to re-issue Coltrane’s Sound (recorded in 1960, but not issued until '64), Coltrane Plays the Blues (1960), Coltrane Jazz (1961), and My Favorite Things (1961). It's an odd set moving from blues to bop and eventually on to the rumblings of the old guard's death rattle. Whatever the case, each will be to the liking of those collectors who relish the finery of 180 gram vinyl.
Coltrane Jazz and Coltrane Plays the Blues are available now, My Favorite Things and Coltrane’s Sound are out July 27 from Rhino.
Hit the jump for a live rendition of "My Favorite Things," where Trane's accompanied by the ever stunning Eric Dolphy on flute.
