Smashing Pumpkins premiere "A Song for a Son," first cut of new 44-track opus

Today, Billy Corgan leaked the first fruits of Smashing Pumpkins 3.0 (or whatever he's on). "A Song for a Son" is track one of a new four-song EP, the first of 11 promised mini albums that will comprise the mammoth Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. It is also the studio debut of new drummer Mike Byrne, the 19-year-old former McDonald's grunt from Oregon whom we recently interviewed.

Starting off with organ and acoustic strumming, the psychedelic ballad inevitably builds to some electric guitar wizardry/wailing. The new kid shows off with a lighter, quirkier touch through some splashy fills and kick-drum rolls. "A Song" is more of an epic opener than single, but the great news is that the simple production sounds warm and organic, miles away for the overproduced radio-bait of Zeitgeist. It hints this could easily be the best thing Corgan's made in over a decade. We dig the Pumpkins when they're indulging their inner Cream freaks. Wank on!
