Find an event

Hey Mr. Spaceman

Thursday evening, I popped over to Ukrainian Village boutique Gamma Player (2035 W Division St, 773-235-0755) for an out-of-the-ordinary event, an "album project exhibition and listening session” for Jeff Mill’s One Man Spaceship CD.

The show at the boutique consists of materials and documents relating to the music and a performance that “techno god” Jeff Mills specifically designed for a venue in Tokyo. The futuristic, elegant rhythms (Mills was deejaying from the store’s stockroom when he wasn’t mingling in the showroom) was evidently inspired by sci-fi (Mills loves Kubrick’s 2001), but also "shiny" jeff mills mixersurfaces and the design of electronic components such as capacitors.

How do I know this? Mills told me. He had a customized Vestax mixer built for the performance and you can see that too. Altogether, it felt like the kind of stimulating and slightly bewildering exhibit I would stumble into in London, Berlin or in New York.

I would suggest that you check out this blog to learn more about One Man Spaceship, but the site is in Japanese. Gamma Player is also carrying the Japanese import CD and Spaceship T-shirt. The artifacts will only be on display through Monday, so I’d suggest hustling on over while you can.
