How to spot…Christian punks

By Martina Sheehan

Identifying characteristics Piercings, Mohawks, dyed hair, punk-band names emblazoned on denim vests and bomber jackets with homemade patches. Less prone to drunken stage diving and angry scowls than secular punks.
Where to find them Hip churches often host shows, but the Union in Naperville presents punk and alternative acts in an arts-minded, church-turned-coffeehouse setting. In late June, the whole scene migrates to Cornerstone fest.
Music Most songs have biblical references. Local acts include Man Made Hell, DXC and Headnoise. Hardcore Christian is a streaming Christian punk, ska and hardcore radio station and ezine.
Mythology A guy named Jesus was sent from Heaven to save mankind but was snuffed out by a jealous Roman emperor; 1,978 years later, punk was born. Shortly after that, Christian punk was born.

Lingo
The Braveheart Called the “Wall of Death” in the secular scene, the move involves the crowd lining up shoulder-to-shoulder to stampede the stage.
Meatgrinder A three-layered circle mosh pit, with each ring of dancers moving in opposite directions.
