“Tenderoni”
Kele
With linebacker biceps, Kele Okereke cradles an MPC sampler against his guns like a piece of exercise equipment. From this new press photo alone, it’s clear that the Bloc Party frontman looks to flex dance-floor muscles on his solo debut. In the canon of “tenderoni” tunes, this certainly ranks far below MJ’s “P.Y.T.” and Bobby Brown’s “Roni.” Kele encases his cockney falsetto in a Jell-O mold of Auto-Tune. We’ll take a crack at the incomprehensible chorus: “A sushi roll / Yanomamö / You were both great in the hay.” But hooks hardly matter, this is pure throbbing electro-house (a.k.a. “what David Guetta makes”), a mere sweat generator. Which would be fine if not a complete knockoff of Bodyrox’s 2006 Ibiza anthem “Yeah Yeah.” Kele may have just discovered the clubs, but others have been grinding away to this beat for years.
