BEST OLD-COUNTRY BUFFET Julbord at Tre Kronor

Ours is a city of illustrious traditions, mostly involving perennially terrible sports teams and dyeing our main water source kelly green. A much different type of tradition, the Swedish julbord, has been carried on for the past 12 years by Larry Anderson and Patty Rasmussen, the owners of North Park’s Tre Kronor, which they opened in 1992. Served in the weeks leading up to Christmas, each julbord begins with hot glogg in the restaurant’s garden before guests hit the incomparable buffet, which features ten varieties of herring and hot dishes like Jansson’s Temptation, a creamy potato casserole. The evenings are capped off with Christmas carols performed by young women in angel-like robes. We hadn’t a clue what they were singing about, but we raised our glasses of dill-infused aquavit in Scandinavian pride nonetheless. 3258 W Foster Ave (773-267-9888).
