Hot sauce

TIME TO DRINK THE DOUGHNUTS When mk’s John Kinder was asked to create a cocktail for Lech Kaczynski, the president of Poland, his seven-year-old daughter said what everybody else was thinking: “Aren’t you scared it isn’t going to taste good?” she asked. But Kinder was confident; he was, after all, designing the drink to emulate one of Poland’s most delicious exports: the jelly-filled doughnuts known as paczki. Dubbed the Sobieski Serenade, the cocktail naturally starts with Sobieski vodka (the Polish brand that commissioned the drink), which is shaken with lemon juice, Cointreau and—in keeping with the paczki theme—two tablespoons of Polish rose-hip jam. As a finishing touch, Kinder sinks some Polish raspberry syrup into the bottom of the glass—a sweet spot, he says, just like the jelly in the middle of a doughnut. No word yet on whether the president enjoyed the drink. But we’re not really worried—it seems like a cocktail fit for a king. 868 N Franklin St at Chestnut St (312-482-9179).
