ELVIS IS JEALOUS The bad part about Violet Hour’s cocktails being so damned delicious is that we suck down three of them before we even realize it. Next thing we know we’re trying to convince our neighbors that there’s a connection between JFK, Hunter S. Thompson and Chamillionaire. Luckily, the soberer and wiser Justin Large (the line cook at Avec who came up with VH’s menu) invented the fried peanut-butter-bacon-banana sandwich ($8) to help soak up some of that loose lip–inducing liquor. Large spreads Parnell’s Pride crunchy peanut butter and housemade banana jam on Red Hen brioche then layers on applewood-smoked bacon. The sandwich gets dunked in egg wash, rolled in chopped-up peanuts and panko bread crumbs, and then fried until crispy and golden. The minor miracle is drizzled with organic wildflower honey before it’s sent out to the cocktail-guzzling crowd in an effort to save another tipsy tippler from embarrassment. 1520 N Damen Ave between Le Moyne St and Wicker Park Ave (773-252-1500).
