KICK OUT THE JAMS While we wait impatiently for the first fruits of the year to arrive, Mick Whitehead and the family at Stover’s U Pic of Berrien Springs, Michigan, have preserved the flavors of last season in all-natural fruit jams. Although Whitehead prefers his simply on a cracker with cream cheese, jams can be a great addition to a cocktail as they provide fruit components while adding a rich texture. Just take care to balance the jam with an acidic or bitter component, such as in this Waiting for the Sun cocktail. In a shaker, add two teaspoons of Stover’s Peach Jam, one ounce fresh lime juice, a half ounce Aperol (or Campari if you can’t find its sibling aperitif) and two ounces of Hendrick’s gin. Shake and double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Jams are $4.75 each at Daley Plaza (50 W Washington St), Thursdays 7am–3pm.
Each week Peter Vestinos, head mixologist at Sepia, hits a different farmers’ market for inspiration to concoct summer libations. For a downloadable PDF of our farmers’ market planner click here.
