LaSalle Power Co.

POWER TRIO Rather than thumping house music and velvet ropes, the massive new trilevel LaSalle Power Co. will have a straight-up bar, deal in diner food (sliders, flatbreads and anytime breakfast) and feature live rock music—a breath of unstuffy air in the sometimes intimidating River North scene. The 20,000-square-foot space is decked out with accoutrements fitting for a ’70s saloon—padded vinyl gold swivel chairs and collages of original rock posters from days past. The building has its own history (it was originally the LaSalle Street Cable Car Powerhouse then Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse and most recently, Lalo’s), preserved in the original floor tiles downstairs. Partners David Mitria and Adolfo Garcia are taking their inspiration from gritty-chic rock clubs like the Viper Room, but also sticking to the unflashy basics that have worked for their other ventures, such as English. For now, there’s no cover—just loads of room to head bang. 500 N LaSalle St (312-661-1122).
