UPDATED: Foie issue being forced today

Posted in Consume blog by David Tamarkin on May 14, 2008 at 3:05pm

According to the Trib, Alderman Thomas Tunney is going to try and force a vote today that would repeal the foie gras ban. That, of course, would make restaurateurs happy. But it means the the public is probably in for another round of endless chatter about this issue, which sounds absolutely unbearable. So I'm proposing a ban on talking about foie gras. Who's with me?

UPDATE: The ban has been repealed. Chicago's reputation for passing ridiculous legislation, however, probably remains firmly in tact.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Man, it isn't taking long for restaurants to start celebrating the news. Chef Didier Durand has already put out a statement—"At last, Foie Gras for everyone!!!" he wrote—and as I type this he is holding a press conference, allegedly with his live pet "Nicolas The Duck" by his side. And Sweets & Savories—home of this foie-topped burger—has already announced a special celebratory meal—six courses of foie, including dessert. So much for stopping the conversation...
