West Town Tavern debuts Thursday fish taco night
Mondays are for fried chicken, Tuesdays are for kobe burgers, Wednesdays are for steak sandwiches. At least in the comfort-food world of West Town Tavern, Susan and Drew Goss's neighborhood tavern that draws in regulars devoted to the couple's weekly specials. Now there's a reason (besides Susan's seasonal American menu, available nightly) to stop in on Thursdays: fish tacos.
The Gosses "fell in love" with fish tacos at a beach shack in San Diego, where they've gone annually for the past 18 years to take part in the Taste of the NFL fundraiser. "I'm really excited to have our own," Susan says: The special debuts tonight.
Her version is tweaked slightly to be more wine-friendly. Specifically: Sauvignon blanc-friendly, which meant regulating the heat of the tacos. It starts with mahi (though the fish will change seasonally to cod then halibut) dipped in buttermilk and in a light mix of flour, cornstarch, cornmeal and cumin before being fried, topped with a pear-black-bean-mint relish, guajillo chile sauce ("fruity with a little hint of spice," Susan says), pickled onions, avocado and chopped roasted peanuts.
Fish tacos are available for $13.95 on Thursdays only at West Town Tavern (1329 W Chicago Ave, 312-666-6175) starting tonight.
