Chef B.K. Park maintains that sushi is actually very simple: a matter of proper sourcing and proper slicing. And indeed, his specials, such as delicate aji and shima-aji, are pristine exemplars of the form. But this restaurant goes beyond sashimi and nigiri, and a mastery of balance is on display in hot dishes, too, such as togarashi-dusted seared tuna perched on a seaweed-and-kelp-noodle salad and the four types of noodle bowls (including the immensely satisfying “Arami ramen,” a meat-laden pork-based broth). Either route, the atmosphere in the earthy, cozy dining room is always warm and pleasant.

"A huge let down" My wife and I went to Arami this past weekend. We were very excited to try this place out. We love sushi and have gone to many of Chicago’s sushi restaurants. Our reservations were for 8pm, but when we got there right on time, we were told that our table is being readied. After waiting for 15 minutes, the hostess told us that we unfortunately lost our table. She provided no explanation. She did offer us seats at the bar. Baffled and hungry, we decided to take the offer. However, being shown where we were going to sit, we decided to leave. We were going to be stuck at the end of the bar next to the kitchen door, where there were a lot of foot traffic and funk coming from the kitchen. Needless to say the whole thing killed our appetite and excitement for the place. As we were walking out, they made no amends for the inconvenience. Needless to say, our friends who were awaiting our review of Arami got the “do not go” vote. Outside of the issues we had, the place was difficult to find, the signage was very obscure. The interior did not inspire; the bathrooms were in the “lounge/bar” area, which is the first thing you walk in to. The décor was very plain, I wasn’t sure if I was at a sushi place or someone’s lowly condo. Arami just did not deliver what my wife and I were expecting. It was a huge let down. Perhaps someday, when we’ve exhausted the many excellent sushi restaurants in Chicago, we may try Arami again.
