[title]She's fit more than 10,000 celebrities in the past decade, so when we talked to Eden Wexler, expert stylist and consultant from Solstice sunglass boutiques about trends in sunglasses this year and what the celebs are wearing, we took lots of notes. Here's how Eden broke down the season's trends with some handy tips on finding the right fit and what some stars are wearing right now.
Shape trends
Retro redux
"We're seeing a lot of looks from the '40s, '50s, the '60s—especially round retro shapes, keyhole bridges, John Lennon shapes and cat-eye silhouettes. Everything that is vintagey is in right now."
Shield of dreams
"The sunglass shield, one continuous lens that goes across the face. That was big several years ago, and it kind of died out in favor of the bigger Jackie O shapes. It has become very big in Europe again, and it's making its way back here. Lady Gaga has been wearing that shape."
Preppy chic
"It's all about the all American classic teardrop: aviators, lots of colorful plastic Wayfarer shapes. All of the brands are doing their take on the aviator because this all-American preppy look is so in. In Italy, they all look like they walked out of a Tommy Hilfiger campaign. Hilfiger is a huge brand there, which we have just launched with Solstice."
Color trends
Vegging out
"Pumpkin, zucchini and eggplant—all these funny veggie colors in subtle colorings"
Blushing brides
"There is a lot of neutral flesh tones in footwear. The same thing is happening in eyewear, too."
New neutrals
"This really is going back to the classics; everyone used to have a pair of black sunglasses or tortoise sunglasses, and they went with everything. It goes with this classic look—a lot of classic styling is happening in fashion right now."
Detail trends
Animal-print patterns Leopard, cheetah, panther, snake
New luxury "Understated elegance, focusing on the materials. Toned-down displays of wealth with minimal logos. Bottega Veneta is a good example."
Price point
"The pricing came down over the last couple years. We had glasses that were selling for over $1,000, and they were flying out of the stores like hotcakes. People are being smarter about their decisions; they may buy one beautiful pair for $1,000 rather then four or five pair for $500. Everyone's mind-set has changed."
Fit
"You have to worry about your own face, rather than going with general rules. You do want to find something that works with your face shape. You don't want something too big, too large or something that doesn't come up high enough between the cheeks. I see men with too much space between the cheek and the lens, letting the sunlight in there. Women with smaller faces—I tend to recommend the Kate Spade brand, cool styles for a small face."
The Grammys
What are the celebs wearing these days? At the Solstice gifting suite at this year's Grammy Awards, Mya went for very mod Marc Jacobs and modern Valentino, which worked with her bangs. Hayley Williams from Paramore went for Carrera with a funky neon color at the edges of the frame. Angela Bassett opted for cat-eye-shape glasses. Donnie Walberg wanted Marc Jacobs for stagewear, and B.O.B. went crazy for Carrera.
