Adidas Men's Climacool Ride, $90 at shopadidas.com
More futuristic and handsome in person than online, the stunning Ride is a very strong Adidas entry in the lighter-than-air running shoe battle. I found it as advertised, quick and energetic, but also supportive enough to make my every morning shoe. The wild tread pattern may take some getting use to for traditionalists, but in this year's field of radical new shoes, the CC Ride stands toe-to-toe with the Nike Lunarglide.—JD

Asics Men's ARD Jacket, $130.00 at asicsamerica.com
Come on, what have you got to throw at me? This Asics all-weather jacket shows us extra stitching as if to flaunt its durability. Stylish in a subtle way, it leans toward tough utility like most of the Asics line. While this tough guy feels ready for just about anything and has pockets for your smart phone, it lacks a hood. Still, I'd throw this on for late fall, early winter runs without giving it another thought and expect it see me through a few seasons.—JD

ASICS GEL-Blur33, $85.00 at asicsamerica.com
I've been running in ASICS since I got serious about jogging in college. (Nimbus, in case you're curious.) I've always wanted to try out a light weight racing shoe from their line and was psyched to try the Blur33. It's a dream—all of the functionality and performance of a training shoe, but with the speed demon-esque benefits of being lighter. For shorter races like 10Ks and 5Ks, I've found my new go-to.—LP

ASICS Men's GEL-Nimbus 13, $130.00 at asicsamerica.com
The GEL Nimbus is a bit of a legend as a training shoe—even in the late ‘80s it was sought-after, but I’ve never given it a shot. My immediate reaction is that this is a rigid, but comfortable shoe made for the long haul and regular use and abuse. It feels like its working for me on my training runs but like a trusty pal, you can really forget its there. There's nothing soft and cushy here, but you won't care.—JD

ASICS Thermopolis LT Full Zip, $85.00 at asicsamerica.com
The buttery soft material feels like a dream on your skin. Mesh paneling in the chest area allows hot air to exit your core while long sleeves, tricked out with thumb holes, prevent cold air from sneaking in on chilly days. This is an all-around solid layering piece that will be great over a tank in the early fall and just as handy over a long-sleeve top as winter temps arrive.—LP

Brooks seamless arm warmers, $25 at brooksrunning.com
Even though it was 75 degrees at the Chicago Half Marathon/5K on Sunday, September 11, I saw several of the fastest, lithest runners sporting these. But still, I think they make pretty much everyone look pretty much bad-ass. More important: They make it easy to control your body temp without the bulk of a running jacket...simply scrunch them down, or pull them off, when you heat up. The Brooks version comfortably stayed put.

NBx Icefil® Short Sleeve, $37.99 at shopnewbalance.com
The NBx line keeps up its rep for hi-tech with Icefil, in short and long sleeves, that are anti-microbial, wicking and even block infared and UV rays. The boxier look complements the NBx shorts naturally.

New Balance NBx 2” women's short, $44.99 at shopnewbalance.com
I so dig the fit on these NB shorts: They're short and slim enough to feel cute, but not so tight and short that you have to be a super skinny minny to pull them off. The cute hot pink detailing is subtle inside the waistband, and the hidden zipper pocket is the perfect size for keys or a credit card.—LP

New Balance NBx 5” Short, $44.95 at shopnewbalance.com
New Balance’s hi-tech running threads have a laundry list of great features, but I tell you what matters to me: They’re anti-microbial, they have a zip pocket in the back for my jogging keys and they’re a medium length square cut for those days when you’re feeling a bit more modest.—JD

New Balance Women's 890, $99.99 at shopnewbalance.com
New Balance says the 890 weighs 9.7ounces, or as much as 19 sticks of gum. After taking these for a jog, I believe it. Airy, light and grippy (thanks to a diamond-shaped on the outsole), these are ideal for a spin down the lake path.—LP

New Balance Men's 880, $99.99 at shopnewbalance.com
The New Balance Minimus is New Balance's entry in the lightweight minimal shoe field. Fans of more traditional shoe need not fret, the 880 is the update to the NB 759. Comfy and ready to roll from the get-go, the made-in-the-USA 880 feels like a solid choice in a training shoe.

Nike Men’s LunarGlide+3, $99 at Niketown (669 N Michigan Ave, 312-642-6363, niketown.com)
Years ago, Nike’s famed ultralight Waffle Racer was my go-to racing shoe, but when I thought about it, I hadn’t run on a Nike recently—maybe I started thinking of Nike as a lifestyle brand and forgot they made shoes, I don’t know. But catching up with Nike was like stepping into the future. Blasting through a 2.5 mile workout in the newest Nike LunarGlide+3 felt like a dream about jogging—almost unreal. The electric and intense colors the shoe comes in may mean that you will see these on and off the trail—but the LunarGlide+3 really wants to be run on. As with no other shoe I strapped into this week, the men’s LunarGlide+3 (extremely light up top, like a web around your foot with a medium soft cushion) seem to give a lot back to my stride in an energy returning bounce. The key word there is bounce. That said, the shoe doesn’t feel like an everyday shoe, but rather the one you wear when you need speed in workout or are doing a shorter race. These babies are special.

Nike Women's LunarGlide+3, $100 at Niketown (669 N Michigan Ave, 312-642-6363, niketown.com)
Of all the swooshes we’ve tried, this lightweight but supportive sneaker is our fave. The foam in the footbeds molds to your peds, so you literally have a custom fit after a couple of runs. Plus, we’re psyched to show our city pride with the limited-edition Chicago pair available just in time for the marathon.—LP

Nike+ SportWatch GPS, $199 at Niketown (669 N Michigan Ave, 312-642-6363, niketown.com)
Let me get this out of the way: This thing is a cinch to set up. Seriously, I did it in three minutes flat. Ive tried various GPS and pace-calculating devices over the years and I've never come across one so intuitive and easy to use. (Especially after you figure out that the USB plug-in is covertly built in to the wrist band—so coolio. If James Bond were a runner, he would wear this while pounding the pavement.) You download the Nike+ software to your desktop (free), charge it up, then hit the road. Press one button to begin recording your run and pace and distance are displayed on-screen. (You can toggle between them.) When you get home, plug your wristband back into the computer and your workout is automatically uploaded to your user profile online—click one button to see your route in Google maps, and another to see a chart showing your pace at any point on your run.
I tend to be of the "less bells and whistles is better"–frame of mind when I'm running, but, I'm telling you, this gadget has made me a GPS convert (about five years after GPS running devices became mainstream, I realize!). Not only did I find myself working harder during my workout simply to see faster pace numbers displayed on the watch, but I also didn't feel like I was carrying a brick on my wrist, as I have with other GPS running devices. Bonus: It comes with with feather-light shoe pod sensor to calculate pace and distand in case you're logging mileage on a treadmill instead of the satellite-friendly outdoors. Consider me hooked!—LP

Puma Faas 550 men's, $90 at puma.com
The Faas shoes come in colors like this attention-getting yellow and pack as much stylish punch as the rest of the Puma running line. They might look slightly different, but they feel radically strange on the foot. The entire shoe is soft, really soft, especially in the heel, which is more cozy than reassuring. As a 200lb human being, I wanted a bit more structure from the Faas 550 under me. That said, I had some great runs with these, but would hesitate to make them my go-to daily shoe.

Puma Faas 550, women's, $90 at puma.com
Helloooooo, rad purple shoes! Like my colleague John, I found these soft....like, super duper uber cushy soft. For an easy day, they're perfect little foot pillows. And even if you're taking a slow jog, you'll feel like a rock star in the awesome purple hue.—LP

Puma Men's Run Tee, $38 at puma.com
I can’t emphasize this enough: Looking good and feeling comfortable will have making less excuses for not getting out there and running more. In the case of the Puma threads, wearing them is a real incentive to run. The Puma Run Tee is the running shirt you look forward to putting on—it feels good, it looks good, it reminds you that you're (reasonably) fit. It lies handsomely across the body like a quality fabric of the future but feels feather light. It will have you catching eyes every time your workout takes you screaming through the parks and trails. In short, this one is a must.—JD

Puma Men's Half-Zip Warm-up Top, $65 at puma.com
We've come to consenus, Liz and I, that Puma has succeeded in making stylish running wear where others have failed or more often, not even tried. The Warmup top made me feel like a very cool dude, so much so that I didn’t mind wearing it straight to brunch after a 5K, I enjoyed it. As with all the latest Puma running wear, the fit and cut is excellent, the pattern fashion-forward and the fabric from another planet. You'll find yourself sporting this even on your recovery days.—JD

Puma Men's Lightweight Jacket, $85 at puma.com
If you were digging the pattern on the Warm-up above, you'll get more of it with this badass runner's jacket, which looks and feels like it wouldn't be out of place on a spacestation. The only downside here? It almost feels wrong to get sweat on this thing.—JD

Puma Festival Run Top, $45 at puma.com
This is not the average (boring) women's running top you'll see on the lake path: the magenta-hued v-neck with white and aqua flecks and a visible built in mesh sports bra (the arm holes are bigger/drape-ier than usual) make it a lot wackier and stylish. It's cool to see that running can be wacky and stylish.—LP

Puma Warmup Hoodie, $65 at puma.com
Obsessed. Obsessed! To the point that I don't just wear it running, but also out for errands, bumming around the house....pretty much everywhere. Aside from being super-cutie, it also has long cuffs with thumb holes and an angled neck zip to allow for some air circulation after you've warmed up on a cool day. Even my hubs, who rarely notices my clothing, commented on the "cool hoodie" I'd been wearing around.

Puma Complete Graphic Running Dress, $75 at puma.com
Confession: I've always thought women looked cute in their running skirts and dresses but I've never had the guts to attempt to it. This magenta Puma version nudged me to try pulling it off. The drop-waist is adjustable so you can create a shape that flatters your figure and it's simple yet stylish enough to feel wearable. The verdict: Personally, I will only break this out for special occasion running (like a race), but it'll definitely make me feel cuter—and, hopefully, faster!—than my usual shorts and tank combo.

Puma Graphic Long Running Tights, $60 at puma.com
These are the perfect lightweight, transition tight as cooler fall temps settle in. Since I've spent the past 10 winters running in plain black tights, the grey background and abstract smattering of pink and blue and white shapes definitely put a spring in my step. One caveat: The waist is a little low, so if you like more coverage in your running tights, you might find yourself yanking these up from time to time.

09/20/2011
The world of running gear has changed dramatically since the jogging boom of the ’70s with its ubiquitous gray sweats and one-size-fits-all running sneaks, though those certainly had a charm of their own. These days, you'll find that running duds available to the contemporary runner range from the practical to the uberstylish, from body-clinging to square-cut, all worked up in fabrics that can possibly wick moisture and resist bacteria and in colors that can be seen in low light. Shoes, too, follow their own design trends, and this year, they are radical. Thinner, barely there ultralight running shoes are the wave of 2011, some consisting of no more than a weblike body and a flexible cushion below with stabilizers in the heel. These shoes aren't generally good for trails; they're made for pavement, which is where most of us run anyway. Luckily, the more tried-and-true options aren't going away.
How do we know? We've taken them for a run. Over the past few weeks, two TOC editors, one a marathoner, one a seriously casual runner, teamed up to put shoes, shorts, tights and jackets through their paces. We hopped into as many of the new fall 2011 shoes, running apparel options and accessories as we could to test them in our own training and race schedule. Should you buy new shoes for the marathon? No, but glean what you can from our reviews, click to buy what you fancy and you're on your way to gear up for the next.
