The original brand, Crocs

The trend
Squishy, light-as-a-feather foam clogs. The original brand, Crocs, is combatting knockoffs with new, equally awkward styles.
First spotted
Although Crocs have been popular with boaters and outdoorsy types since their debut in 2002, they crawled onto the feet of urban landlubbers last spring.
Who’s buying it
Dear Lord, everyone: gardeners, beach bums, orthopedic patients. And tourists. Lots and lots of tourists.
Where to find it
Uncle Dan’s The Great Outdoor Store (2440 N Lincoln Ave between Fullerton Ave and Montana St, 773-477-1918) stocks a rainbow of Crocs ($30) for men, women and kids. Nordstrom Rack (24 N State St between Madison and Washington Sts, 312-377-5500) has “Gators” knockoffs for $10.
Bottom line
Laugh at the goofy Euro-hippie styling if you must, but these sandals are a comfortable option for wading in the lake or doing dirty yardwork. Don’t wear them in respectable society, and nobody has to know you rock the Crocs.
