Think global, buy local
Leave your passport at home and pick up foreign finds at boutiques in your own backyard.
You don’t have to be a globe-trotter to shop like one. These items—all exclusives in their respective local shops—will spare you the jetlag without skimping on style. But buyer beware: The cost that shop owners pay for customs may add an extra Benjamin or two to your bill.

Smitten as we are with the scents of French line Molinard’s fragrances—including gardenia, citrus and musky—it’s the Golden Age–inspired packaging that caught our eye. Silver dollar–size, gold-plated medallions encasing concrete perfumes and colored glass bottles with tasseled pumps for the liquid version will have you channeling Greta Garbo while powdering your nose in the ladies’ room. $70–$250 at Asrai Garden, 1935 W North Ave between Elk Grove and Damen Aves (773-782-0680).

Swedish designer Carin Wester’s garments score points for their sexy yet comfy style. Fitting right in with Hejfina’s minimalist aesthetic, a simple palette of black, gray, white and caramel, and geometric patterns such as stripes and color blocking characterize the T-shirts and sweater dresses. Graphic-printed cotton leggings inject some quirkiness. $164–$370 at Hejfina, 1529 N Milwaukee Ave between Honore St and Damen Ave (773-772-0002).

This fanciful take on taxidermy alleviates any ethical dilemmas that stuffed-animal decor might present. French designer Tamar Mogendorff’s colorful creations include button-eyed owls perfect for perching on a dining room table and this whimsical deer head to hang above your front door. $85–$700 at Asrai Garden.

House of Sole showcases an accurate cross-section of Spanish shoe designer Paco Gil’s style: eclectic. The selection runs the gamut from round- to square- to pointy-toe heels, and boots in fabrics ranging from wine-colored patent leather (pictured) to dark gray flannel. We dig the Euro-looking platform pump and slouchy fit of the knee-high leather boots that accommodate ladies with thicker calves. $285–$425 at House of Sole, 1237 S Michigan Ave between Roosevelt Rd and 13th St (312-834-0909).

Electronics made of sustainable materials can be hard to come by, and it’s even more difficult to find one that looks good...until now. Exclusive in the U.S. to this brand-new eco-friendly boutique, Indonesian designer Shinggih S. Kartono’s retro-style AM/FM Magno radio is made with three kinds of wood sourced from his village resources—java ebony, mahogany and pine. $178 at Pivot, 1101 W Fulton Mkt at Aberdeen St (312-243-4754).

Australian designer Marnie Skillings’s eponymous line offers the kind of timeless pieces you’ll want to wear ten years from now.
