Return to duty

Jessica Herman

The disappearance of the Belmont Army Surplus a little more than two years ago left a gaping hole in Lakeview—gone were the days of oxygen mask–clad mannequins greeting the passengers at the Belmont El stop. While the shop’s second coming looks more Urban Outfitters (baroque-style wallpaper, chandeliers) than the original’s drabby-chic style, the type of inventory remains nearly unchanged. The first floor of the four-story space showcases play clothes for girls—Paul Frank sweatshirts, BB Dakota party dresses and reversible Volcom hoodies for guys. Peacoats, puffers, army-surplus bags, plus vintage track jackets, blazers and polyester frocks fill the second floor. Like before, the shop makes its greatest impression with the shoe collection, from Converse in every color (not to mention, Reeboks, Vans, adidas, etc.), to the few dozen “fuck you” goth boots and Dr. Martens. Even the ominous mannequin is back in the window.

855 W Belmont Ave between Clark St and Wilton Ave (773-549-1038, belmontarmy.com).
