What, this old thing?
What's old is new again at these vintage shopping sites.
For affordable shopping Modcloth.com
Focused less on name brands than original pieces mostly from the ’60s to the ’80s (not to mention some adorable contemporary wares), Modcloth predominantly features casual pieces such as day dresses and geeky striped Bermuda shorts ($30), plus fun accessories like a feathered ’60s cloche ($40). Added bonus: You can count on impeccable notes about the clothing’s quality.
For buying and selling Marketpublique.com
Essentially eBay for womens’ vintage clothing and accessories, this less-than-two-year-old Brooklyn-based site accepts attire from mostly the ’60s to the late ’90s. Find a smattering of designer pieces, from a Pucci “stewardess” dress (around $658) to Chanel sling-back flats (around $268). Best of all: Not only does Marketpublique fabulously style the garments on hipster-looking models, but pretty much every piece in the outfit comes from the site’s collection…so if you fancy the whole look, you buy it from head to toe.
For boho-chic Mamastonevintage.com
While this eBay storefront does a bang-up job collecting stellar ’80s pieces like leather corset bustiers and military blazers, we prefer its selection of ethnic-looking hippie dresses from the ’70s with bell sleeves and sweet embroidery that cost less than $100. If you’d rather not risk losing that metallic tiered mini dress to another bidder, grab it immediately for a reasonable $68. Take advantage of the ability to view garments from multiple angles and in up-close shots.
For designer names Enokiworld.com
Clicking through this site is like taking a fashion history class. Looks from Lilly Pulitzer, Emilio Pucci and Yves Saint Laurent are all represented on this women’s clothing site run out of a restored antique gas station in St. Louis. Each garment gets a special write-up. For example, shoppers are encouraged to scoop up a vintage Galanos black and plum dress ($2,250) because the designer is on the verge of becoming a legend (“Vintage Galanos is every bit as masterful and gorgeous as Norell or old-school Beene”). When the shop featured a ’60s Adolfo wool wrap skirt with coins and applique, it reminded shoppers that Adolfo shouldn’t be strictly remembered as the designer who made those Chanel knockoff suits. The site also features accessories, home goods (including retro board games) and outerwear.
For fab accessories Poshvintage.com
You’ll find plenty of vintage goods on this site (including shoes, a Pucci department and even a selection of men’s clothes), but it’s the accessories that really stand out. Look for a huge selection of handbags (including a variety of patchwork bags from the ’80s), scarves by the likes of Halston and Yves Saint Laurent as well as Givenchy necklaces from the ’80s. Other standouts include a ’70s gold disco belt featuring a lion-head buckle ($115) and Givenchy wallets from the ’70s and ’80s ($125–$285). The items are in such good shape, you might be tempted to buy them only as collector’s items.
