Most fashionable TV shows of the aughties
Reality TV, drama and nostalgia all played roles.
1. Sex and the City (1998–2004). Yes, it debuted in the late ’90s, but the majority of the show aired during this decade—and its fashion influence is still being felt. We can thank (or blame) Carrie Bradshaw for flower pins, initial necklaces and over-the-top obsessions with designer shoes.
2. What Not to Wear (2003–present) What did women do before Clinton and Stacy? The reality-show hosts transform the wardrobes of one lady at a time by giving them “rules” (guidelines tailored around age, body shape and profession), plus cash for shopping.
3. The Hills (2006–present) Okay, the story lines on this MTV spin-off of Laguna Beach are totally fictional, but the fashion is for real. When LC and Audrina wear something cute and stylish, you’ll find the imitation at Forever 21 within weeks.
4. Gossip Girl (2007–present) Google the term Gossip Girl fashion, and you’ll find a ton of sites devoted to the clothes Serena, Blair and the other characters wear each week. In the fall of 2009, designer Anna Sui even dedicated a Target womenswear line to the show.
5. Mad Men (2007–present) Don Draper’s sleek, early-1960s look (think fitted suit, skinny tie) inspired Mad Men–themed costume parties around the city. Menswear store Brooks Brothers got into the act this year with its own line of suits dedicated the show.
