Dr. Carolyn Jacob dishes on how to stink less and whether antiperspirant is harmful

Time Out Chicago: Is there a benefit to using deodorant instead of antiperspirant?
Dr. Carolyn Jacob: There isn’t a health benefit. Some people sweat a lot and need antiperspirant. When you sweat, there’s an overgrowth of bacteria; that’s what causes the odor.
TOC: Does the aluminum in antiperspirant cause cancer?
CJ: Absolutely not. It’s a total old wives’ tale.
TOC: Since antiperspirant stops your armpits from sweating, does sweat just build up inside you?
CJ: You’re always sweating elsewhere. Sweat glands are most concentrated on the face, underarms, soles and groin. You’re still going to sweat.
TOC: Any way to sweat less?
CJ: You can use antibiotic prescription wipes to get rid of bacteria, but there’s nothing you can do to not sweat, except not get hot.
TOC: Is there one type of deodorant—spray, roll-on, cream—that works best?
CJ: It depends on your personal needs. I like the clear gels because they dry quickly. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll be best off with a cream or a stick. The gels have propylene glycol, which can be irritating.—Annie Tomlin
