Turn over a new leaf
These new fitness products help you pound the pavement, not the environment.

Run for your money
The Brooks Cascadia 2 trail running sneakers ($95) were designed by a vegan marathon champ to be easier on the environment. The rubber outsole uses silica sand as the toughening agent rather than carbon black—a petroleum-based product that comes from burning natural gas. The material is extra grippy—perfect for a rainy-day run. Available at brooksrunning.com.
Tropical inspiration
This summer, New Balance will debut CoCoNa natural technology in apparel that uses charcoal derived from coconut shells. The charcoal is then combined with polyester fibers to create a garment with evaporative cooling, odor resistance and UV protection, including a reversible shirt ($70), run jacket ($70) and zip-neck pullover ($65). 2369 N Clark St (773-348-1787, newbalance.com).
Green dream
Bring an extra dose of good karma to your yoga session with lululemon’s non-PVC and non-chloride Eco Ultra Mats ($35–$54). They’re made of a material called Thermal Plastic Elastomer—they contain no rubber or latex, and no toxic chemicals are used during production. The mats come in a rainbow of colors and three different thickness levels. 2104 N Halsted St (773-883-8860, lululemon.com).
Golden fleece
The folks at Patagonia are making history with their recently expanded Common Threads Recycling Program. The initiative calls for recycling all Patagonia fleece, capilene and cotton tees that have been shipped back to the company when customers outgrow or just grow tired of them—plus all of the competition’s Polartec fleece. (Polartec makes fleece for everyone from the North Face to L.L. Bean.) We love the new cheery, yellow women’s Capilene 1 Tank ($32), which is 100 percent recyclable and made of 100 percent recycled polyester content. 1800 N Clybourn Ave (312-951-0518, patagonia.com).
No sweat
Destink your bod while you’re working out in adidas’ bamboo gear. Eco-friendly bamboo fibers infused in the Supernova Crop Top ($36) reduce body odor, while cooling mesh inserts on the back and underarms stop sweat and steaminess before they start. Available at shopadidas.com.
