What's up with that?

Q: What's up with the shrine by the bar at the Hideout?

A: This Virgin of Guadalupe–esque "shrine" is seemingly a tribute to the murdered Tejano musician Selena (she's depicted in the painting that is the shrine's centerpiece). Cofounders Tim and Katie Tuten often travel to Austin, and the Texas-born Selena played her last show in Chicago. But the events surrounding its creation make it more of an icon of this North Side bar, known for its alt-country music, colorful regulars—and candles. The painting is by artist Roberto Valadez, a regular when the bar opened in 1996. One of the bartenders liked it, and gave it its own place in the alcove. In the Hideout's early days, the Tutens lit a lot of tall glass devotional candles "to bring a good vibe [to the bar]," Tim says. But when regulars from Pilsen warned they could bring bad energy (you have to be careful which ones you light and when), the Tutens replaced them with regular candles. One ended up on a column in the alcove—next to Selena—making kind of a sanctuary. "It's a quai-pop icon that [also] speaks to...Hispanic culture, religion, Chicago, Texas," Tim says. "It's usually the first candle that our bartenders light; sometimes we'll find a plastic ring or flower [there] at the end of the night."—Leah Pietrusiak

The Hideout Block Party is Friday 16 and Saturday 17.
