Brave nude world?

In his 1516 book Utopia, scholar Thomas More coined the term that refers to so-called ideal society. This month, Walkabout Theater explores this concept in a rather roundabout and sometimes comical way with Impossible Cities: A Utopian Experiment. The “experiment” is a mix of: performances that depict utopian visionaries such as Mormon prophet Joseph Smith; installation, visual and performance art showing how different people have crafted visions of a perfect world; and live music from acts such as Lichens, the local solo project of 90 Day Men’s Rob Lowe (Friday 12), and banjo aficionado Paul Metzger (Saturday 13). In one of four theatrical presentations, playwright Ira Murfin presents memoirs and a video projections recounting the time he spent at Arcosanti, an experimental city in the Arizona desert. Murfin assisted Italian architect and philosopher Paulo Soleri, who started the eco-futuristic colony based on the concept of arcology (architecture and ecology) in 1970. For his contribution, artist Dave Beck melded images of himself and a sculpted doll to pose an idealized perception of his future self in the photo series “Self-Portrait of Myself at 50 in the Corporate World”. Perhaps nothing’s perfect, after all. The show runs through January 27. For more info, visit www.walkabouttheater.org.—Leah Pietrusiak
